Pacman Ghost Bean Bag Chair

I was going to make a Pacman bean bag chair out of the material I had left over from making a plushie robot but I didn't have enough material. So now he's sort of a weird overly large pillow. I really wanted a bean bag chair though so I decided upon a ghost. At first I tried using a sheet to make it with but the sewing machine just wouldn't sew it right. So I went to Walmart and got a few yards of pink fleece. The sewing machine worked fine until I had only a few feet to go so I hand sewed it from there.

What You'll Need

You'll need:
  • A sewing machine. You will definitely want to use one unless you are A) Really good at hand sewing stuff, B) Willing to take quite a while to finish this, and C) Can sew sorta fast.
  • Thread.
  • Material. I used 3 yards of fleece but you can use more or less depending on how big you want it.
  • Bean bag beans. I got mine out of an old beanbag chair that was full of holes covered with tape to keep the beans in. Don't use the ones I used that can be really small or really big. Use ones of a uniform size like the ones I put in Pacman.
  • A pair of good scissors.
  • A marker.
  • (Optional) A seam ripper. Let me tell you, these things help a lot when you mess up.
  • A vacuum. Trust me, you'll need one.

Cut It Out!

Draw a ghost shape onto the material and cut out two ghost shapes of the same size. It helps if you cut them out together but you don't have to. Make sure they're symmetrical or it will look weird when you put them right sides together (The right sides are the ones you want facing out). Because then when you sew them up and turn it all right side out the bottom part of the ghost will be sorta wonky. Don't cut them out of the middle or the bottom part, put them one above the other so the other side will be a long rectangular piece of material at least two feet wide. You will cut this in half the long way so you have two long rectangles and then sew them together (Right sides together) so you have one really long piece of material. This will go around the edges of the ghost to pretty much hold it together and give it dimension. You could just sew the two ghost pieces together but then when you stuff it it won't be as full of beanbag beans and won't be as good of a chair.

Sew Here We Go....

Sew the pieces together now. Put the long rectangle on the ghost (right sides together, of course) and sew so that the edges of the ghost and the rectangle are touching and are even the whole time. The bottom part might be a little hard to sew but it isn't really that hard. Once you finish sewing one of the ghosts on do the same thing for the other. Be sure to leave a hole to turn it inside out and put the beans in! When you have finished both ghosts turn it right side out.

Oh No....

This is probably the hardest part. Filling it with bean bag beans. At least it was hard for me. There are a few ways to do this. If you have someone to help you they (or you) can hold the ghost up so the other person can pour the beans in. You could also pour them in a box and then pour them into the ghost. Bumpus told me that it would probably work if you suck the beans up with a shop-vac and then blow them into the ghost. The way you put the beans in is up to you. When I was making this I ran out of beans. So I took the ones out of Pacman (he's going to be properly stuffed soon and when he is I'll have a picture of him with the bean bag chair) and put them in it. There still wasn't enough. So I shoved a pillow in it. Yes a pillow. Oh and my first version of this. It worked pretty well.

So once you've completely filled the ghost hand sew him shut. Be sure to sew it shut well so none of the beans come out.

Clean Up...Ugh

Vacuum up all the beans and sew eyes onto your ghost and you're done! As I type this I still haven't vacuumed up because my brother is asleep and I don't want to wake him up just yet.

If you have any questions or you can't figure out what the heck I mean about something just ask. Sometimes things make sense to me but not other people...

I'd love to see pictures if you make one of these!
