Now those of you that have raised a puppy, you know that keeping them out of trouble can be a big job. One of the best ways to keep them occupied is with lots of different toys that help to keep them stimulated. I wanted to make a toy that would help her focus her desire to forage and work for her food since she is part beagle. So I came up with a quick and easy to make toy to keep her occupied. So if you are interested, please read on!

For this project you will need...

  • 2" diameter PVC
  • PVC end caps
  • Hacksaw
  • Drill
  • Marker
  • Sanding tool/ sandpaper
  • Dog food

Cutting to Length

The first step of this guide is to cut the PVC pipe to your desired length. I decided to make it a bit bigger than one of her other toys to give it some weight so when she pushes it around, it doesn't just slide across the floor spilling its contents everywhere. Mark the desired length with the marker and cut it out using the hacksaw. When it is cut free, sand off the edges until smooth.

Drill the Holes

Depending on how easy/difficult you want to make the toy, you will drill more holes for an easier toy. Sadly, I realized this after I had already drilled all the holes. If you want to make it particularly difficult, I would only recommend 3-4 holes. Once you are satisfied with the number of hoes, ,You will want to clean up the holes to remove the shavings so your furry friend doesn't cut their mouths or swallow any pieces that come free.

Finishing Touches

Before I passed the toy off to my dog, I took it to the bathroom to rinse off all of the dust and shavings and get them out of the pipe. Once you are confident it is all cleaned out, you can fill it up with your dog's favorites for them to enjoy. Cap it off on both ends and they are ready to play. Thanks for reading!
