This circuit provides voltage pulses that will turn the LED on and off indefinitely. The function of the integrated 555 is clock or CLOCK, that is, it is the component that generates the voltage pulses.

The frequency or speed of the pulses produced by the integrated circuit 555 depends on the values ​​of the resistors R1 and R2 and the capacitor C1.

When pin 3 of the IC is LOW or zero volts, current flows from the positive to the LED, to the resistor, and then to the negative of pin 3. Therefore the LED is turned on.

When pin 3 of the IC is HIGH, no current flows through the LED diode because it has two high voltages across the LED diode and resistor R3. Therefore the LED diode turns off.

So what function does a 555 integrated circuit fulfill?

The 555 integrated circuit is used as a timer, pulse generator, or oscillations. It can also be used as a flip-flop integrated circuit.
