Some time ago I found an awesome wooden dog LED lamp by "Well Done Tips" here on intructables.com (https://www.instructables.com/howto/Wooden+dog+lamp/). I built this lamp for my grandson and granddaughter. Some time later I thought about designing this lamp in a smaller version for 3D printing. The dimensions of the original wooden version are about 530x450mm, those of the 3D version about 320x290mm. I have reduced the original by about 40%. Based on the filament material I use here, I call him PLAzzy (PolyLacticAcid).

The files must be printed in the following number of copies:

  • 1x PLAzzy_LED-Dog-Lamp_head.stl
  • 1x PLAzzy_LED-Dog-Lamp_back.stl
  • 2x PLAzzy_LED-Dog-Lamp_ear.stl
  • 2x PLAzzy_LED-Dog-Lamp_body.stl
  • 2x PLAzzy_LED-Dog-Lamp_leg_long.stl
  • 2x PLAzzy_LED-Dog-Lamp_leg_short.stl
  • 1x PLAzzy_LED-Dog-Lamp_neck.stl
  • 1x PLAzzy_LED-Dog-Lamp_tail.stl
  • 1x PLAzzy_LED-Dog-Lamp_lightsocket.stl

Print Settings:

  • Printer brand: Prusa
  • Printer: I3 MK3S
  • Supports: No
  • Resolution: 0,20
  • Infill: 15%
  • Filament brand: Prusa
  • Filament color: Galaxy Black, Silver
  • Filament material: PLA

After you have printed your parts ...
Remark: As all parts are designed to fit very precisely, it may happen that you have to rework one or the other part a bit with sandpaper and/or cutter due to different dimensional accuracy of the printers and the different behavior of the filaments.

Supplies

  • 2x - Ø 4x55mm from a threaded rod (or screw Ø m4 x 60 and saw of the screw head)
  • 2x - Ø m4x20mm (for the ears)
  • 2x - Ø m3x16mm + plus 2 matching washers (to connect head, neck and light base)
  • 6x - wing nuts Ø 4 mm
  • 16x - washers Ø 15x4,5mm
  • 1x - 64x64x3mm white acrylic glass, 70% translucency (or transparent acrylic glass or twin wall-sheet)
  • 4x - self-tapping screws 2,2x 9,5 mm
  • 1x - AC/DC Socket 5,5/2,1 mm
  • 4G bulb socket
  • 1x - 4G bulb 2,5W/250LmAC 125 V 6A
  • 3 Pins 2 Position ON-ON Mini Toggle Switch
  • 1x - 12 V AC/DC power adapter
  • switch wire
  • Soldering Iron
  • Solder

IMPORTANT: I do not recommend installing higher wattage bulbs in this lamp, as the heat development could be too great.

Preparation - Choose the "glass"

First of all I would like to mention that I don't think these LEDs are really attractive. That is why I was looking for a way to make them as invisible as possible and still get good light.

I have tried with different materials:

  • white acrylic glass, 70% translucency. The least translucent of the three variants. However, this does not allow any conclusions to be drawn about the light source. The last was important for me.
  • twin wall-sheet. Also an interesting possibility. View inside is distorted. LEDs only blurred to recognize.
  • transparent acrylic glass. Makes the most light. But unfortunately you can see the LEDs.

... finally also a matter of taste!

Preparing the Lamp Head - Installation Polycarbonate/acrylic Glas

I have chosen white polycarbonate/acrylic glass, 70% translucency.

Saw from the polycarbonate glass plate a square of 64x64x3mm. I did it with a fretsaw. You can finish the edges with sandpaper.

Insert the sawed piece into the lamp head - against the inner edge in the front area of the lamp head.

To fix the glass put very carefully small drops of (super)glue at the corners. Let the glue harden.

Preparing the Lamp Head - Light Socket

Go on with "PLAzzy_LED-Dog-Lamp_lightsocket.stl".

To attach the bulb socket to "PLAzzy_LED-Dog-Lamp_lightsocket.stl" you need a Ø 2mm drill bit. Feed the two wires of the base through the hole in "PLAzzy_LED-Dog-Lamp_lightsocket.stl". Hold both parts firmly together and drill through the two holes in the bulb socket into the printed part.

Now fix the bulb socket with 2 self-tapping screws Ø 2,2x 2,9 mm to the "PLAzzy_LED-Dog-Lamp_lightsocket.stl".

Preparing the Lamp Head - Soldering

Now take the just assembled part, the 2 Position Mini Toggle Switch and the AC/DC Socket (5,5/2,5mm).

You need one switch wire about 10 cm long. Solder the wires from the bulb socket and the switch wire to the AC/DC socket and to the switch as shown in the picture and in 3D. Then put the switch through the hole in the "PLAzzy_LED-Dog-Lamp_back.stl" and screw it tight.

Now take "PLAzzy_LED-Dog-Lamp_neck.stl". To connect head, neck and light base you need 2x - Ø m3x16mm + plus 2 matching washers.

Preparing the Lamp Head - Close Lamp Head

IMG_33.jpeg
IMG_54.jpeg

Bevor you close the back of the lamp head you have to mount the two "PLAzzy_LED-Dog-Lamp_ear.stl".

For the mounting you need:

  • 2x - Ø m4x20mm
  • 2x - wing nuts Ø 4 mm
  • 4x - washers Ø 15x4,5mm

Do not screw it t too tight so you can move it later.

To fix "PLAzzy_LED-Dog-Lamp_back.stl" to the lamp head you need 4x - self-tapping screws 2,2x 2,9 mm

PLAzzy - Assembling

For the final assembling you need the files:

  • PLAzzy_LED-Dog-Lamp_body.stl
  • PLAzzy_LED-Dog-Lamp_leg_long.stl
  • PLAzzy_LED-Dog-Lamp_leg_short.stl
  • PLAzzy_LED-Dog-Lamp_tail.stl

... and

  • 2x - Ø 4x55mm from a threaded rod (or screw Ø m4 x 60 and saw of the screw head)
  • 4 wing nuts Ø 4 mm
  • 12x - washers Ø 15x4,5mm

Have much fun with PLAzzy!
