How the PETFusion Machine Works

The PETFusion machine operates through a straightforward process that efficiently converts PET bottles into 3D printing filament. Here’s how it works:

  1. Prepare the Bottle: Start by cleaning and drying your PET bottle to remove any contaminants.
  2. Cut the Bottle: Use the built-in cutter to remove the bottom part of the bottle.
  3. Strip the Bottle: Create a small initial strip from the bottle to feed into the machine.
  4. Feed Through Hotend: Insert the strip into the machine's hotend, which molds the plastic into a 1.75mm diameter filament. The plastic doesn't melt but is shaped into a round filament.
  5. Automatic Pull and Cut: An 8nm torque DC motor powers the spool, which pulls the filament through an automatic cutter. As the spool pulls, the bottle automatically feeds through the cutter, ensuring a continuous process.
  6. Colorizing: As the filament is pulled, it passes through a chamber where it is colorized using a permanent marker.
  7. Wind onto Spool: The finished filament is wound onto a removable spool, making it easy to start printing without winding into another spool.

Cost Savings Calculation

One of the significant advantages of the PETFusion machine is the potential for substantial cost savings. Let’s break down the savings:

  • Cost of Commercial Filament: High-quality commercial 3D printing filament typically costs around $20-$30 per kilogram.
  • Cost of PET Bottles: PET bottles are usually free or very cheap. Recycling centers often provide them at no cost.
  • Filament Yield: From a 1.5-liter PET bottle, you can produce approximately 18 grams of filament.

Assuming an average usage of 1 kilogram of filament per month for a 3D printing enthusiast:

  • Monthly Cost with Commercial Filament: $25 (average cost)
  • Monthly Cost with PETFusion Machine: Minimal, considering the cost of PET bottles is negligible.

Over a year, the savings can add up significantly:

  • Annual Cost with Commercial Filament: $300
  • Annual Cost with PETFusion Machine: Substantially lower, primarily just the initial cost of the machine and minimal operating expenses.

Additionally, using PET bottle filament provides comparable strength to commercial filaments. PET filament exhibits excellent tensile strength, durability, and resistance to impact, making it suitable for various applications, from prototyping to functional parts.

Assembly Process

Assembling the PETFusion machine is a user-friendly process that doesn’t require advanced technical skills. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. 3D Print the Parts: Print all the necessary parts for the PETFusion machine using your 3D printer. STL files are available for download.
  2. Gather Components: Collect all required electronic components, including the DC motor, hotend, torque motor, speed controller, and filament colorizer. These components are widely available from local electronic stores or online platforms like Amazon and AliExpress.
  3. Assemble the Frame: Follow the provided assembly guide to construct the machine’s frame. The parts fit together seamlessly, similar to assembling Lego blocks.
  4. Install Electronics: Install the electronic components according to the assembly guide. Ensure all connections are secure and properly configured.
  5. Test the Machine: Once assembled, test the machine to ensure it operates smoothly. Adjust any settings if necessary.
