Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches are classic... but now it's time to take them to the next level! By following these steps, you will be able to make an old favorite, but this time it's a cake! This sandwich looks so realistic yet is absolutely delicious, and a dessert!
To make the PB&J Sandwich cake, you will need:
- Butter
- Sugar
- Vegetable Shortening
- Eggs
- Flour
- Milk
- Vanilla
- Baking Powder
- Salt
- Peanut Butter
- Jelly
Setup for Making the Cake
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, and get out your ingredients.
For this part, you will need:
- 0.5 lbs or 2 sticks of butter and a little extra to butter the pan
- 0.5 cups vegetable shortening
- 3 cups sugar
- 5 eggs
- 3 cups all purpose flour
- 0.5 tsp fine salt
- 0.5 tsp baking powder
- 1 cup milk
- 1 tsp vanilla
Sugar, Butter & Shortening
Measure out the vegetable shortening and butter. Beat in an electric mixer until smooth. Then, slowly add in sugar while mixing.
Eggs
Add the eggs, one at a time, into the mixer. Beat the mixture after each addition.
Whisking the Mixture
Pour the batter into a separate bowl. Whisk until well combined. Then, put the mixture back into the electric mixer's bowl.
Finishing Up the Batter
Add both the milk and half of the flour into the mixture. Mix until smooth. Next, add the remainder of the flour, the baking powder, and the salt, as well as the vanilla. Beat again.
Transferring the Batter Into a Pan
Butter a pound cake pan (it is totally fine if you use a cake pan instead). Pour the batter into the pan and get ready to bake!
Baking Your Cake
Bake for 1 - 1.5 hrs at 350 degrees. To see if your cake is done, poke a toothpick in and test to see whether the toothpick comes out clean.
Cooling Your Cake
Cool completely.
Removing the Cake From the Pan
Take a spatula and scrape the sides of the pan to ensure that the cake comes out cleanly. Flip the cake over and tap the bottom of the pan until the cake comes out.
Setup for Assembling the Sandwich
For this part, you will need:
- Your cake
- Peanut Butter
- Jam/Jelly
Slicing the Cake
As shown in the picture, cut your cake into pieces about 1 - 1.5 inches thick. They should be about the same size as slices of bread.
Putting Your Sandwich Together
Take two pieces of cake and set the rest aside. Spread a thick layer of peanut butter on one slice. On the other slice, add lots of jelly. Put the pieces together so that the jelly and peanut butter touch.
Finishing Touches
Put your "sandwich" on a plate. You are now ready to enjoy the most delicious peanut butter and jelly sandwich ever!
