Overnight Texas-French Toast Casserole
The purpose of this recipe is to create a hearty breakfast for the whole family that is prepared in a pace convenient for everyone. With some easy overnight preparation and refrigeration to start this off, only baking time in the morning is all that needed to feed up to six people. This casserole combines the taste of classic French toast with a slight twist; it contains sliced-thick Texas style white bread, a hint of vanilla, and an extra kick of cinnamon. Bacon goes great with this dish!
Notice
This Texas-French toast casserole recipe contains tree nuts and common white bread. Therefore, this particular configuration of ingredients is not intended for people with gluten intolerance or tree nut allergies. However, those with tree nut allergies may alter the recipe as they wish.
Materials
The quantities of the ingredients and some utensils listed here produce approximately twelve finely baked Texas-French toast slices that can easily feed six people. To serve gatherings of different sizes, multiply each quantity accordingly, so their proportions are constant.
Ingredients
8 large eggs
3 sticks of unsalted butter at room temperature
½ cup of milk
1 cup of “half and half” (half cream and half milk mixture)
1 cup of packed light brown sugar
2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
1 sprinkle of table salt
1 sprinkle of sugar
1 cup of chopped pecans
Utensils
One 9 in. x 13 in. baking dish
Two medium mixing bowls
A cooking whisk
A wooded or plastic mixing spoon
Overnight Preparation
The procedure within steps 7, 8, and 9 can take place the night before the recipe is to be served. No baking or preheating is required, but only preparing and refrigeration is to be done.
Praline Topping
Grab a medium mixing bowl and a mixing spoon. Also, retrieve two of the three unsalted sticks of butter, the cup of packed light brown sugar, one teaspoon of ground cinnamon, half teaspoon of nutmeg, and the cup of grounded pecans if it’s appropriate.
Pour all the listed ingredients above in the bowl and mix with the spoon. Continue until the mixture has a rich consistency and smooth brown color. Refer to the figure.
When mixing is finished, wrap and package the bowl with its contents accordingly for overnight refrigeration. Place the bowl in a nearby refrigerator.
Texas-French Toast
Grab the other unused medium mixing bowl and the metal whisk. Also, collect the eight large eggs, loaf of sliced-thick Texas style white bread, cup of half and half, teaspoon of ground cinnamon, half cup of milk, half teaspoon of nutmeg, teaspoon of vanilla extract, and a dash of sugar and salt.
Crack all eight eggs in the bowl and whisk the eggs thoroughly. Then, mix all of the other ingredients listed above (except the bread) and mix well with the whisk. Continue until the mixture looks much like what’s in the figure shown.
Before going any further, retrieve the baking dish and the remaining stick of butter left at room temperature. Generously smear butter by the end all over the inner surface of the dish. Use the above figure as a reference.
Texas-French Toast Continued
Now, grab the loaf of sliced Texas bread. Get rid of those bud slices located at the two ends of the loaf; they are useless.
Pick out a nice Texas bread slice. Carefully dunk it in the French toast mixture so that it is soaked and dripping of the mix.
Place the soaked slice on the corner of the buttered baking dish. Repeat the entire process again with a new slice and neatly place it on the first. Continue this until the row reaches the end of the baking dish. When the end is reached, start a second row beside the first. Refer to the figure.
Pour whatever French toast mix remains in the mixing bowl all over the Texas slices. Then, store the full baking dish in the refrigerator overnight accordingly.
Mealtime
Pull out both the baking dish full of soaked Texas bread slices and the praline mix. Remove any saran wrap and have them ready.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Pour dollops of the praline mix onto the Texas slices within the baking dish. Then gently spread the praline all over the exposing sides of the Texas-French toast casserole as if one was icing a cake. Refer to the picture shown.
Place the full baking dish in the oven for 40 minutes, or until the slices are puffed and have a light golden brown color.
Completion!
After the baking process is complete and all said is done, the finished casserole should look something like what's in the photo shown. This goes great with bacon.
