Origami Folded Earring Caddy

If you are looking for a stylish, practical, easy, and economical way to store your earrings,  then the Origami Earring Caddy is the way to go!  You can make this in less than 2 hours.  I guarantee you won't make just one!  This will be a well received gift for any occasion.  A couple of pieces of cloth, drinking straw, embellishments, folding techniques and a small amount of sewing or gluing will have this project singing.  You could make this with just paper if you wanted to.  I like to try different materials for different looks.

You will need:

2  Pieces of contrasting fabric scraps,  10X10.
2 Pieces iron on interfacing measuring the same size as the cloth,  napkins,  or hankies you will be using.   
1 Plastic drinking straw. 
1 Needle and matching thread or glue (optional.)  It just makes it stronger but it is not necessary. 
Sewing machine  if you are sewing like I did. Again this is optional.  I wanted a more finished look.   It can be glued.
Embellishments I made a yo-yo and added a button.

Please note:  I think you could make these out of paper, napkins, or hankies.  The interfacing adds body to the fabric and makes it firmer. 

Cut 1 of each:  (fabric and  lining) and 2 (interfacing)  all the same size (10X 10.) 

Iron the interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric and lining following the instructions for interfacing.  Use a piece of cloth, wax paper, or paper so it won't stick to the iron.

Prepare cloth:
 

Match the fabric to the lining right sides together.
Mark the seam making a narrow seam allowance as shown in the picture.
Leave a 3-4 inch opening to turn the fabric right side out as shown.
Pin together if needed.

Please note:  You may use fabric  glue if you don't have a sewing machine.  

Beginning at the seam opening sew all the way around the square,  pivoting at the corners without lifting your needle until you reach the ending of the opening for turning.  See picture. 

Clip all the loose threads and all 4 corners at an angle.  
Turn right side out.
With the point of the pen or scissors poke out the corners to make a sharp corner.  

Iron the cloth and press the hem under at the opening as shown in the picture.   
Sew a narrow seam allowance all the way around the cloth making a nice finished edge. 
Trim loose threads.
Press again.

I made a yo-yo and sewed a button in the center of it for the embellishment. I think it should have been a little smaller.

Please note:  You want your main color to be facing down not up.  I wanted the printed side to show the most and I folded it wrong so I took it apart because I loved the print much more.  The pictures were after I had sewn the heel and toe.

If you would like a more secure heel, sew or glue where the seams are as shown in the pictures.  

Attach the embellishments.
Before sewing the end of the heel.  Cut a small piece of the drinking straw and insert it into the very end of the heel and pin it.  This adds strength to the heel.  Then sew up or glue the heel seam.  
Stitch the top edge where the heel connects.
Stitch the toe if you want it more secure.
