Origami Dragon

IMG_20220525_085811.jpg

|Video in last step if needed| It's an origami paper dragon. I personally made it for the fun of it, but it's up to you to choose what you use it for. Can take time depending on skill level and experience, but hopefully you'll be able to learn. I find it fun making things and feel proud when I finish, even if I need help. I'm making this for a project and also to teach a person I know, but anyone is welcome to learn.

Supplies

All you need is a square piece of paper. 6 inches is what I used but whatever you have works. If you need to use scissors to cut a regular piece of paper into a square, then that's fine. Be careful of paper cuts, as well as the scissors.

Diagonal Fold

IMG_20220523_092859.jpg

With the white part inside, fold one corner to the other and try to line them up as best as you can.

Another Diagonal

IMG_20220523_093003.jpg

Now, with the two corners you haven't touched yet, fold one corner to the other.

Triangle to Square

IMG_20220523_093030.jpg
IMG_20220523_093101.jpg
IMG_20220523_093130.jpg

Open up one side of the triangle, and fold the top of the open triangle to the bottom left corner, making a square. Flip it over once done.

Other Side Now

IMG_20220523_093856.jpg

Now lift the triangle so that it looks like a fin. Then open the triangle, and fold the top down to make a square.

Make the Diamond Skinny

IMG_20220527_084706.jpg

Now, look at it like a diamond. The bottom should be the one that opens, the top is closed. Take the 2 sides on the left and right, and fold the bottom edges to the middle, making an uneven skinny diamond. The longer side should be the open one, the shorter side is the closed one.

Fold the Top Down

IMG_20220523_093429.jpg

Fold the shorter side over the longer one, as much as you can. All of it should be folded down

IMG_20220523_093444.jpg

Unfold it, and fold the top point until it just touches the 2 triangles.

IMG_20220523_093540.jpg
IMG_20220523_093454.jpg

Unfold it all to the diamond, then flip it over. Now repeat steps 6-8 on this side.

IMG_20220525_095142.jpg

After your all done, unfold it all and find the open side. Now carefully open it all the way until you have the original paper square you started with.

Square Sink Fold

IMG_20220523_093702.jpg

Now, you see the tiny square in the middle. There's 2, but the one inside is the important one right now. Take that square, and fold the edges. It will look like a tiny square with lines out the corners, and a plus sign and X are in the square.

IMG_20220523_093722.jpg

Push down the middle, and push 2 sides together to make a sort of x. Fold it flat.

IMG_20220523_093812.jpg

You should have a diamond with a flat head. What you're going to do is take the flat end, and fold it's corners inward. The fold makes a line, and the line's end should touch the middle line and the place where the upside down triangles start. Repeat on the other side.

Long Diamond With Legs

IMG_20220525_095413.jpg

Grab the end of the diamond opposite of the flat edge, and lift it open. You're going to want to fold in the lines you can see there, to make a long diamond that has 2 legs. Do the same to the other side.

Fins

IMG_20220523_095544.jpg
IMG_20220523_095623.jpg
IMG_20220525_095556.jpg

Take the half triangle that isn't in half, and fold it to where the side touches the middle of the diamond. Do that withe the other edge. You should have an X. Fold it inward until you make a sort of fin, and repeat it to the other side.

IMG_20220523_095908.jpg
IMG_20220525_095741.jpg
IMG_20220527_085503.jpg

Take the 2 triangle legs and fold the edge to the middle. Do that to both, and it should also be pointing outward. Unfold, flip it over, and do it to this side. Unfold it, push the back of the triangle in so that the fold lines you just made make the triangle look the same on both sides.

Upside Down Triangle Fold

IMG_20220523_100133.jpg
IMG_20220523_100310.jpg
IMG_20220525_100045.jpg

Open up the triangle legs, and try to fold the edge to the middle of the triangle. The triangle should become thinner and is now upside down. There should also a little triangle next to it, like a flap. Do this one the other side and repeat with the other triangle.

Fold the Wings

IMG_20220525_100213.jpg
IMG_20220525_083542.jpg
IMG_20220525_083618.jpg

If you look at it from the top, with all flaps pointing out, then it should kind of look like a plus. Take the 2 flaps that are shorter, and it upward at any angle. It just has to have the bottom of the fold touch the middle.

Neck and Head

IMG_20220525_083737.jpg

Now, take the other triangle that is facing the opposite way of the wings. Start from under it. Separate the folds and push the triangle back, this is it's neck. When you push it back to where it lines up with the tiny flaps, fold it in half. Take the tip, and fold at an angle so that the point faces away from wings. Unfold, and using the lines, fold that small section in on itself, to make a sort of beak. Now take the edge of the beak, and fold it backward on itself. The front should be flat with a point sticking out the back. Kind of like a hammer shape.

The Legs

IMG_20220525_085409.jpg
IMG_20220525_085417.jpg

To make the front legs, take the 2 tiny flaps on either side of the neck. Fold the back, facing away from the head. Now fold it down so that the top edge lines up with the middle. Now, for the back legs, just take the other 2 tiny flaps on the opposite side, and fold the top edge to the middle.

Tail

IMG_20220525_085458.jpg
IMG_20220525_085639.jpg
IMG_20220525_085558.jpg

Take the long triangle, opposite of the head. Open it, and put your finger between the folds while trying to close it. Now with the folds widened, squeeze the folds together so that you have 2 parts sticking out, and fold the top of them to the tail. Keep the bottom still, and it will make the tail start to lift at an angle. Do this at another place on the tail to make it look curved.

Final Touch

IMG_20220525_085657.jpg
IMG_20220525_085725.jpg

The final touch, which is just for style points, is to go to the wings. Open the wings, and make it a kite shape. The top edge should line up with it's 'spine' or whatever. Now, you have a dragon! If you did it right.
