Orientation Using a Watch

Have you ever wanted to know where North was, but didn't have a compass? There are several alternative methods, such as the one I present here, which is very simple. You'll only need an analog watch and basically the sun, so I recommend being outdoors. Ready?

Supplies

  1. 1 ANALOGIC WATCH (It's important that his time is correct or with very little margin of error)
  2. SUN

Hemisphere North

Okay, we're outside. In the hemisphere north. We have a watch and we want to know the cardinal directions.

  1. We begin by holding the watch horizontally, with the dial facing upwards.
  2. Point the hour hand towards the sun.
  3. Approximately, the midpoint (the between the 12 on the dial and the hour hand) will be SOUTH.
  4. From this, find the others cardinal directions.

Hemisphere South

In the hemisphere south, the method is a little different.

  1. We begin by holding the watch horizontally, with the dial facing upwards.
  2. Point the 12 symbol towards the sun.
  3. Approximately, the smallest midpoint (the between the 12 on the dial and the hour hand) will be NORTH
  4. From this, find the others cardinal directions.
