Orientation Using a Watch
Have you ever wanted to know where North was, but didn't have a compass? There are several alternative methods, such as the one I present here, which is very simple. You'll only need an analog watch and basically the sun, so I recommend being outdoors. Ready?
Supplies
- 1 ANALOGIC WATCH (It's important that his time is correct or with very little margin of error)
- SUN
Hemisphere North
Okay, we're outside. In the hemisphere north. We have a watch and we want to know the cardinal directions.
- We begin by holding the watch horizontally, with the dial facing upwards.
- Point the hour hand towards the sun.
- Approximately, the midpoint (the between the 12 on the dial and the hour hand) will be SOUTH.
- From this, find the others cardinal directions.
Hemisphere South
In the hemisphere south, the method is a little different.
- We begin by holding the watch horizontally, with the dial facing upwards.
- Point the 12 symbol towards the sun.
- Approximately, the smallest midpoint (the between the 12 on the dial and the hour hand) will be NORTH
- From this, find the others cardinal directions.
