This project will make your entire craft inventory visible, which is invaluable when you need find that specific piece of scrap fabric or take stock of which material you have a surplus of and can donate to make space.

Supplies

Supplies needed:

● Any craft supplies such as fabric, yarn, scrapbook decor, home decor, etc

● wire cube shelves. You can buy the set of 12 listed here and construct it into whatever shape suits your space. In my example, I used a 3x4 grid. It comes with all the tools you (may) need, such as a light mallet and corner connectors.

Make Some Space and Assemble the Wire Cubes

This will go by easiest if you are able to occupy a large, open space for the afternoon. If you do not have that option, start by clearing the spot you plan to put your wire cubes. I chose a spare closet, but other options include under desk or stacked up inside a corner. (My living room photographed better, so I assembled there and pushed the shelves in place afterwards.)

These wire cubes are forgiving enough that you can assemble them while inside the space you plan to keep them, or push/carry them inside that same space after the fact (they're pretty light). I used just my hands for the first couple, but a light wooden mallet is included to help tap the corners securely into the connectors.

Set Up Three Stations

Before you start to organize your fabric onto your shelves, set up three potential recipient stations: keep, donations, and trash.

If you're unsure of where to donate, consider a local library that hosts crafting events and summer programs. There are also community centers hurting for art supplies for their after school/summer programs. Or, you can always take a picture and post something along the lines of "free craft supplies to a good home" on an upcycle site like freecycle.org, offerup.com, or Craigslist.

Organize Piece by Piece

I chose to organize my fabric by color. Within each cube, my fabric is sorted heaviest (felt, fleece, etc) on the bottom and lightest (cotton, satin, etc) on top. I kept the bottom space nope for miscellaneous supplies, like spare sewing machine parts and cotton stuffing.

Going one piece at a time is time consuming, but creating a place for everything will help prevent future clutter, because supplies will have a predetermined storage place.
