Supplies
For the Cake:
1. 3/4 cup flour
2. 1/4 cup cocoa powder
3. 1/2 teaspoon plus 1/8 teaspoon baking soda
4. 1/8 teaspoon salt
5. 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
6. 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons sour cream
7. 1/3 cup vegetable oil
8. 1 large egg
9. 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
For the Oreo whipped cream:
1. 30 oreo cookies
2. 4 1/2 cups heavy cream
3. 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
4. 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
Tools: bowls, measuring cup, measuring spoon, whisk, mixer, cake pan
Make the Cake
First preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Then take the cake pan and spray it with a non-stick pan spray. The next step is to take all the dry ingredients (flour, cocoa, baking soda, and salt) and mix them into a large bowl. In a second bowl whisk the sugar, sour cream, oil, eggs, and vanilla until smooth. Take the wet ingredients and mix it with the dry ingredients with the whisk. Then pour the batter into the cake pan. Bake the cake for 20-25 minutes. Take it out of the oven for 15 minutes to cool. Then remove it from the pan and let it cool for about 1 hour on a cooling rack.
Make the Frosting
Out of the 30 Oreo cookies take 5 cookies and put them aside. Chop up the remaining cookies into about 1/4 inch pieces. In a bowl you will whip 2 cups of heavy cream until fluffy and soft. In another bowl whip the other 2 1/2 cups of heavy cream with sugar and vanilla until fluffy and soft. Then take the first whipped cream and fold it together. Take about one cup of the mixture and put it in the refrigerator for later to decorate the top of the cake. Take the chopped Oreo cookies and mix it with the remaning whipped cream.
Assemble the Cake
Put the cake on a cutting board. Slice the cake (carefully) in half horizontally to make 2 layers. Take the whipped cream mixture and spread it onto the cake. Then put the second cake on top and repeat. Cover the whole cake in frosting. Take the 5 extra cookies and put them in a ziplock bag. Crush the cookies and decorate the top of the cake with them. Chill the cake in the refrigerator for about 2 hours and then serve when ready to eat.
Conclusion
As you can see making an Oreo cake is easy. All you need is just a few ingredients, time, and lots of Oreo cookies. I learned that you have to measure the ingredients carefully or the cake won't turn out right. You can make the cake alone but it is easier when a parent helps. One challenge was whipping the cream. It was my first time using an electric mixer and my hand got tired because I had to mix the cream for a long time. Now that you know the steps you can make this cake for your family and friends. You can even be creative and add your own design on the outside. This cake is perfect for anyone who loves Oreos...young or old!
