Attachable Dry Toilet - Prototype 4 (Banheiro Seco Acoplável - Protótipo 4)

prototipo4_en.png

History: This prototype was developed by me in the context of a social business project, named S+ (Sustainable Sanitation), incubated at the Yunus Social Business Brasil (1st cycle). Also participated in the project Thais Cosa, Cecília Rodrigues, and Ilana Goldsmid.

Warning: You are required to have knowledge on composting techniques before trying to build/use this toilet.

Features: UDDT (Urine-Diverting Dry Toilet); this project does not use a third-party UDDT separator; reuses space of existing regular toilet; urine is not collected; external hand urinol (optional); based on prototype 3 without the Separett piece.

Pros: reuses space of existing toilet, no need for extra space; collects urine for treatment ou use as biofertilizer; provides urinol for men; saves water (no flush needed).

Cons: urine storage for many days can cause extremely bad smell; not very simple to remove the urine container (this would require a door in the structure);

Note 1: you can use either the biodegradable bag or a bucket (10L). The recommendation is to use a bucket, because it is easier to remove/replace. In that case the structure needs to be a bit higher (about 5cm higher if you use a 10L bucket).

Note 2: to make it easier to remove the urine container it is recommended to include, in one of the sides or in the front, a small door.

Note 3: The piece of rubber balloon in the tip of the hose helps to prevent urine smell from coming back up through the hose.

Note 4: Instead of using recycled plastic (6mm thick), the structure can be made of plywood (1cm thick) .

The urinol is a simple plastic container. After use you should pour the urine into the funnel, followed by some water.
