Got a Halloween party coming up? Maybe you just want to be really obnoxious while casting levitate in D&D. Well with this giant Oogie Boogie dice from Nightmare before Christmas you can do just that. So let’s get started

Credit to “Much props” for the template he has a tutorial on his channel that goes into great detail because he made the template, so check it out.
(After reading this of course)

To get to building you will need the template made by much props, I linked it earlier but you should still check their channel out as they made the template.

On to the build cut each shape out individually. When cutting out the eyes just fold the paper and cut a hole in the eye that way you can cut them out. Be extra careful around the nose’s. Once you are finished cutting trace the shape of the eye onto a piece of paper and cut that out. Numbers 5, 6 have circles on the dice that aren’t just in the skull.

Tracing to Foam

Be very careful when tracing to the foam this will be the guidelines for where to cut. If you don’t have a steady hand to hold the template still get a weight to hold it down. Ensure you make 4 extra circles with that circle template you made in the last step. On top of this ensure you make 6 squares as it will form our cube later.

Carefully cut out the foam. What I recommend is cutting inside the lines so everything is consistent. Be very careful when doing this as this will affect your final result.

Gluing/Sanding

Start with gluing the cube together this is the base of the cube. When formed you just want to sand all over, really make it look used. It’s optional but looks great in the end. Once the cube is sanded you can glue on each skull. It shouldn’t matter which side you glue each number too. But if you want you can use a reference dice to get it perfect. On numbers 5, 6 glue the extra circles according to the reference sheet in the template.

Wood Grain (Optional)

I used my dremel which is one used for sanding nails but a screw can work it just may take longer. On the dice draw some areas where you want some wood grain and carve those details in. (be careful though if you used thin foam like me it may stab through easily) Once you are content with the grain on each side of the cube you can move on to painting.

Painting

Once the base cube is assembled we can start adding paint. Start with a coat of black paint, I just used cheap acrylic paint but any paint should do. Once you’ve let the base coat dry go over the whole thing in a layer of red. I used a darker red but if you go lightly a brighter red should work too.

Weathering

Get a disposable cup and fill it with a bit of water, then add black paint into the cup. This is just some weathering solution to muddy up the dice a little bit. Slather it all over a single side of the cube and dab it off with a paper towel and repeat until it looks dirty enough. We want to make it look like it’s been used for ages so don’t be shy with the weathering of the paint if it’s too bright.

Enjoy
