One Way Sharing System
We live in a world where everybody has his own life, his own habits, and his own activities, but in the meantime we still want to be connected with other people. This 'One Way Sharing System' creates a very simple accessible platform where people can share stuff, but can't steal stuff that has already been hand in.
In this 'Instructable' we build a sharing platform for seeds of herbs, vegetables and flowers, but there are many other situations in which a sharing board can play an important role: Handing in the key's of your room at a youth hostel; An idea delivering platform for suggestions at f.e. schools, youth movements; ... We count on your creative interpretation of our product.
Based on a honeycomb and it's hexagonal forms we created a friendly and natural looking product that can be mounted on the wall. No conventional locking systems are used to discourage vandalism. The jars can be accessed by using a simple key: a bolt.
HOW IT WORKS//
- An organisation installs this honeycomb structure and distributes several jars (Filled or not filled with stuff) to his public.
- When people want to hand in the jars, they simply drop it in the honeycomb structure.
- Stealing already handed in jars is impossible because of a natural locking system: the perfect fitting honeycomb structure.
- When the responsible person wants to collect the jars, he uses a simple bolt to lift the backside of the frame. (The bolt screws in a nut attached to the backplate. Turning the bolt pulls the 'Back Panel' to the front.) When the backside is lifted, then can easily acces the lifted jars.
- When screwing the bolt back out, a spring pushes the backside back against the wall, the frame is locked again.
EXAMPLE SITUATIONS//
Seed sharing: (Urban) gardening is getting more and more popular. The sad part is that many people are cultivating vegetables, herbs and flowers and spilling the most valuable part of it: the seeds. Sharing your own cultivated seeds can easily be done with this ‘One Way Sharing System’:
- In the beginning of the year you get jars from the community with seeds
- After cultivating the plants, you harvest & dry your seeds
- Hand in the jars into the honeycomb frame
- Seeds are well conserved in the jars during winter
- After winter, the organisation opens the frame, and distributes the seeds over the interested people.
Key Hostel: Handing in the keys at a hotel or a hostel isn’t always functioning smoothly, and that sad because you have to cache your flight, train, … This is an example cycle where the ‘One Way Sharing System' solves this problem.
- When you arrive at the ho(s)tel you receive a little jar with the key of your room
- At the end of your vacation you can put the key back into the jar and drop it in the honeycomb frame.
- The staff of the hostel have a nice overview of which room is occupied and which is free.

LASERCUTTING 8 HEXAGONS
First step is lasering out the different honeycomb structures. Take in to account the following parameters.
PARAMETERS//
- Material: Multiplex birch
- Thickness: 6mm
- Maximum dimensions one hexagon: 390 x 340mm
- Lasering time: ± 50min
- Illustrator files in attachment
- Front Plate: 1x
- Inner Plate - Extra: 1x
- Inner Plate: 5x
- Back Plate: 1x
SAWING SIDE PANELS
The 'Side Panels' can be sawed with any sawing tool which can be set under an angle (Panel saw, Crop saw, Tilting saw, …)
OPERATIONS//
- Saw first one plank with the sides under an angle
- Divide this plank into the 6 final 'Side Panels'.
PARAMETERS//
- Material: MDF
- Thickens: 18mm
- Angle chamfered sides: 60°
- Further dimensions in attachment

PAINTING SIDE PANELS
In this prototype the side panels were painted in white, but you can chose any color or leave unpainted. Tip: you can hang the panels on a rope to paint them, like that you can paint both sides at once.
DRILLING HOLES IN SIDE PANELS
The bolts that attach the frame to the wall have to pass through the 'Side Panels'. Therefore we need to drill a hole. Do this step very careful, because the outlining of the drilled hole will define how precise the 'Side Panels' will fit.
PARAMETERS//
- Bore: Ø10mm
- Further dimensions in attachment

PLACING MAGNETS IN BACK PANEL
To fix the jars into the honeycomb structure and also to get some tactile feedback when placing a jar, we use little magnets. These magnets will attract the lids of the jars.
OPERATIONS//
- Push the magnets into the holes
- Make arise with the top of the plank
- Eventually drop at the backside some superglue in the hole to fully fix the magnets.
GLUEING 6 INNER PLATES + TOP PLATE
To create a thick honeycomb structure we glue 6 layers of multiplex on top of each other. Make sure the layers fit perfect on each other so the jars can smoothly pass. Use normal wood glue.
OPERATIONS//
- Glue the 6 'Inner Plates' perfectly on top of each other
- Finally glue the resulting structure on the 'Front Plate'
GLUEING SIDE PLATES
The last step in assembling the upper part of the product is glueing on the 'Side Panels'. Tip: Put a plug trough the holes of the 'Side Panels' and the 'Front Panel'. This will asure the passage for the bolts.
GLUEING NUT LOCK
At the side of the product a nut has to be fixed to the back panel, for that we first create a 'Nut Lock' where the nut will fit in. These two little parts are part of the lasercutted panel 'Inner Plate Extra'.
OPERATIONS//
- Glue the two parts perfectly on each other
- Get pressure on both side during tens of minutes (Make sure the flu is fully dry before testing)
PUSHING IN NUT
When de glue of the previous step is dry you can push the nut into the hexagonal hole. Make sure the nut is fully inside de 'Nut Lock'-part.
GLUEING NUT LOCK TO BACK PLATE
The final step in assembling the back side of the product is glueing the nut lock to the 'Back Plate'. Tip: use the bolt to line out the holes of the 'Back Plate' and the 'Nut Lock'.
COMBINING FRONT AND BACK SIDE
The only part left in creating the product is combining the front and the back side using a spring.
OPERATIONS//
- Push the spring around the 'Nut Lock'
- Put the back side inside the front side, the spring has to fit in the hole of the 'Inner Plates'
DRILL 6 HOLES INTO THE WALL
To attach the frame to the wall we first need to drill 6 holes in the wall.
OPERATIONS//
- Use the technical sketch in attachment to indicate the location of the holes on the wall
- Drill out the holes
PARAMETERS//
- Bore: 10mm
- Depth hole: 75mm
- Technical sketch in attachment

SCREWING IN THE SCREWS
Final step: screwing in the screw into plugs. This will fix the frame durably to the wall. The product is ready to use!
OPERATIONS//
- Know the plugs trough the frame into the holes in the wall with a hamer
- Screw in the screw until its totally fixed
PARAMETERS//
- Screw: Ø10mm
- Plug: Ø10mm
JARS
Beside the frame we need also a bunch of jars which will be filled by your public. On the inside of the lid you can write what’s going to be inside, or people can write it themselves. Tip: Use different background colors to create different themes, the colors will reflect beautifully in the glass jars.
PARAMETERS//
- Diameter sticker: Ø42mm
