OmniDirectional DisCone HDTV Antenna

I wanted to try making an omnidirectional antenna. It's as good as
commercial indoor antennas and gets WSBTV, FOX5, ION and most other local channels clearly.

Parts:

  • Creamer container
  • Aluminium foil
  • Scrap wiring
  • Terminal connector
  • Duct tape

Make Disc

Cut out a piece of aluminum fol and tape it to the edges of the lid (I used a creamer container). Leave the center open for connection to cable going to center lead of coax. I made a hole in the middle of the lid and foil, but you can might as well tape the lead to the top. The lid wound up being taped to the _bottom_ of the can.

Cone

The strands of the wire making up the cone are folded over the edge and they are all twisted together and taped close to the edge.

Connections

The cone connection to the outer shield of the coax. The exposed copper cable is connected with several strands of copper taped to the aluminium foil on the lid to ensure a good connection.

I put a few pieces of cardboard between the lid and the can to get an even distance and taped the whole thing. It's now ready for coax.

Afterthoughts

It gets WSBTV, FOX5, ION and most other local channels except GPB (PBS) clearly. It's better than some of the commercial indoor antennas I've wasted money on!
