Oh Deer! One Year Paper Quilling Project

Talking about unfinished projects, I think I got a box of unfinished projects. Whether it's because I stuck on the idea, running out of supplies, or maybe just not in the right mood :p. But now I really want to finish this Deer-Tree paper quilling that I started in 2019. In 2016 I made a design for a tote bag, and then I thought that it would be interesting if I made the paper quilling version of it.

I remember that I was unable to finish this project because I wasn't confident with the deer's face. Look at that poorly drawn deer face, I was afraid that the project wouldn't turn out well because the face looked like some weird creature instead of a deer :( Drowning in insecurity, I put my project in my box, and it got forgotten because of assignments, examinations, and other activities since I was in my master degree. Now that I don't have much activity and I see the Instructables contest, I have strong motivation to get this project finished and then hang it on my room wall. Let's get started!

3. Paper strips (0.5 cm)

10. Cylindrical tool (I used a plastic straw)

First thing first, I have to remove the dust on the project. All this time I stored it in a 3D frame, but it turned out that the frame didn't repel the dust :( I always remove the dust on a paper quilling project using painting brush, no. 2 (not too big, not too small) just the right size to remove the dust between paper strips. I gently blow on it to help removing the dust.

The tree was mostly done, I just needed to add some branches and leaves.

To make the leaves I used two forms of leaves. The first one I used a straw to make a cylindrical paper strip and then pinched the paper strip to make a 3D leave-shaped paper strip. In the other form, I cut the colored paper into a simple leave form.

As I mentioned before, I wasn't confident with the deer's face. I decided to resketch the deer's face, hoping it would turn out well.

After that, I started to do the paper quilling from the easiest part, the eyes. Then the nose and ears, and then the overall face. Until now, I usually made flowers, popsicles, or typography paper quilling. I have never made a face using paper quilling. So this is kind of new for me. The technique was quite simple. I just glued the paper strips in a certain pattern/direction. It's quite simple but needs a lot of patience :) Please see the video to see how I arranged the paper strips.

I think I really need to praise myself. Really. After all this time finally, I get to finish this dream project. Remembering how I decided to pause this project because I wasn't confident with my drawing, one year later I got this project finished in three days :D
