Non-kinking Dog Leash

I like to use a slip-on leash with my dog when we're just going on a short walk or back and forth to the car. These are very convenient because you just slip them on the dog's neck and you're ready to go. The problem with these leashes is they tend to kink as the dog moves around. This Instructable is about how I modified a slip-on leash to eliminate kinking.

Supplies

To make this modification requires the following:

  • a rope swivel
  • some thin, strong cord
  • super glue
  • heat shrink tubing (optional)

Cut the Leash and Insert the Swivel

Cut the leash in half near the handle (about 4-5 inches from the handle). Insert each end through the swivel and bend the cut portion into an eye (as shown in the photo). Wrap the cord tightly around where you formed the eye and tie it off. I covered the cord with super glue to make sure it never unraveles.

Use Heat Shrink Tubing to Cover the Cord

This step is optional. I had some large diameter heat shrink tubing so I slipped it over each splice and heated it with my heat gun as added insurance that the cord would never come loose.

This modification totally eliminated this type of leash from kinking. It is easy to do, and eliminates having to periodically twirl the leash around to un-kink it.
