NomNom Green Smoothie

It might not look like much, but a bunch of organic kale, a bag of organic frozen strawberries, and fresh or frozen pineapple (not canned) can really make for a happy morning.

De-stemify

….to make sure the smoothie, is, well, smooth, we don’t use the tough stems. After a quick rinse, my little one and I simply pull the leaves off and dump them in a strainer.

Add the Fruity Goodness

We pack the entire bunch of kale in, along with a cup or so of frozen pineapple chunks. (If I’m using fresh pineapple, I use half a peeled, cored fruit and save the other half for later in the week.)

Make It Berry Delicious

Blend it up on the highest setting, adding water as necessary (usually about 1/2 cup at our house) and let it work its way to really, really, smooth. At this point, you can dump in the (12 oz) bag of frozen strawberries, or use a pint of fresh ones!

Generally, that’s all we use to make a delicious green smoothie, but today the little one felt like adding raspberries, too, and how could I refuse? (A handful of frozen raspberries are a nice morning snack, too, as you can see, or as a garnish for a special spoonful.)

Once it’s blended smooth, you can pour it into a glass and enjoy. We like ours nice and thick, but if you like to use a straw, add a little more water.

Save the Rest for Later

I pour the extra in a giant Mason Jar and label it so I remember to finish it quickly! With a big glass of one of these smoothies, my kids get at least all the calcium they need in a day, plus protein, and vitamin A and C!
