No-sew Sock Puppet With Recycled Martials
If you are done with wearing your socks on your feet, then It's time to wear them on your hand. That might seem weird, but when it comes to art you can use whatever material you like to create an artwork. In this instructable we will make a no-sew sock puppet whose parts are entirely made of reclaimed materials from home, so let's get started.
Supplies
We will need:
- A pair of socks.
- A pringles can.
- Thin cardboard sheet.
- Red cardboard from a flip calendar.
- Book cover with a white background.
- A strap of cloth.
- Glue gun.
- Pencil.
- Black marker.
- Ruler.
- Scissors.
Sketching the Mouth
To make the puppet we need first to determine the size of the mouth. It has to be a little bit bigger than your four fingers size, after that you should:
- Mark the length you determined.
- Draw a semicircle that connects the marks.
- Draw a parallel straight line to the base of the semicircle.
- Draw another opposite semicircle that is a bit bigger than the first one.
Sketching the Mouth
After we drew the mouth imprecisely, we can use a compass to redraw the sketch with more defined curves.
Cutting Out the Mouth
Use scissors to cut out the mouth, then with a ruler and a pencil redraw the lines so it would be easier to bend.
Inside the Mouth
To make the inside of the mouth:
- Put the inner thin cardboard mouth on the red cardboard.
- Trace the shape with a pencil.
- Cut out the red shape.
- Minimize it so it would fit better in the mouth later.
Cutting the Head
To make the head, use an empty pringles can and cut through it vertically till you reach your desired height of the head, then cut horizontally.
Fingers Place
In order to be able to fit your hand into the puppet, you have to cut two opposite semicircles in the can that can fit your fingers, and to make sure they are perfectly aligned use the ruler to determine where to cut.
Covering With the Sock
After you use a glue gun to stick the head and the mouth together, now put it inside the sock, but before that:
- Let the big and pinky toe out and push the other fingers inside.
- Put a strap of cloth in the sock and make sure they stuff the ears.
Gluing the Mouth
Now use a glue gun to fix the sock with the inner and the outer mouth as shown.
Adding the Details
For the nose, cut a red small triangle from that book cover
For the uvula, draw around it with a black marker.
For the fangs, cut two thin triangles and glue the with the glue gun.
More Details
As you see I've made small eyes then felt they are not looking good, so I cut bigger circles from the book cover and drew big eye pupils then glued them on the face. I also cut a thin strap from the cover and glued it to make the teeth.
Whiskers and Ears
For the whiskers, draw them with the marker.
For the ears, cut two pink half ovals from the cover and glue them.
After you're done wear the other pair of socks in your hand to cover it, as the puppet is short.
We Are Done
Now we can wear the socks in our hands and enjoy pretending we're having a conversation with them, I mean the no-sew sock puppet.
