Nightstand Dock
I want to make product for beside my bed wich has a clock, a light, and can hold my phone.
What you'll need:
- 3D print fillament
- 3mm wood (250x600mm)
- the inside components of a wall clock
- an USB hub
- 3 white LED's
- 3 100 ohm resistors
- Electrical wire
- an USB cable
- a switch
- solder
- tape
- hotglue
Machines/Tools:
- Acces to a laser cutter
- Acces to a 3D printer
- Solder iron
- Hotglue gun
To laser cut:
Nightstand Dock.ai (Adobe Illustrator file)
To 3D print:
LED box prt1.STL
LED box prt2.STL
Switch box.STL
Laser Cutting
I made my first design in Illustrator to see if the size for the phone was right and if the living hinge would work.
The size was alright, but my phone would fall out, so I wil need to make in wider. And the living hinge broke! so I'll need to try a different design there.
Trail and Error
My previous laser cut design broke at the living hinge so i adjusted the living hinge, longer lines and closer together.
When I had cut the second one, i noticed that i could easily place my iPhone, but couldn't take it out as easily.
And also i wanted a little more room for the clock.
so in desgin #3 I have widened it and also made a cut in the backplate of the phone-hold-section so i can take the phone out more easily.
Electronics
I tried to power a LED with an USB cable (5V) and it worked! But i want is a bit brighter so i am going to try a lower resistor.
I found that a 100 ohm resistor works great so i took 3 of those.
Then i did a very poor job of soldering the resistors to the LED's ;) , but it worked! To make sure there wouldn't be any short circuits (I didnt have any electrical tape, wich i do reccomend), I used a little bit of black paint to cover up some exposed areas.
Adjusted Design to Make It Stand Better
I made it longer and with a second hinge to create a triangle, so it can stand better.
But as you can see on the first picture, somehow i accidentally messud up the space for the phone; it got smaller.
I also noticed some other minor things i would like to change, like move the hinges a little more out of the way to create more room for the cable at the bottom.
And change the backplate for the phone (with the apple logo) so i also could use other charge cables that are a bit fatter.
3D Printing
The next step is to print a case for the LED's and for the switch.
I made a box with three openings so the light of the LED's could shine trough.
I placed the soldered LED's inside and tested it to see if it worked. It did. Then I hotglued everything so it is nice and secure and wouldn't move around.
For the switch I also made a box with two circles in the bottom through wich the wires can go.
USB Hub
In order to power both the LED's and my phone, i bought a USB hub.
The usb cable was very short so i wanted to extend it.
I had a long USB cable and soldered it to the hub.
Important note: I found that to power the LED's you only need to solder the black and red wires together, but if you also want to power your phone (in my case an iPhone 5s) you will also need to power the green and white data cables.
Putting It All Together
I wired the LED's to the switch and to an USB plug (This plug was previously on the USB hub) And taped the wires together so it looked better.
Then i hotglued the LED's, the switch and the hub to the back of the stand on the inside.
And that is that!
The Finished Product!
And there it is!
I hope you liked this instructables.
