Narrow Foot Rest for Manual Wheelchair Use in Tight Spaces
This is a footrest that can be added onto a standard manual folding wheelchair. This allows the persons feet to be closer to the wheelchair, which is helpful for navigating tight spaces. The actual lengths and connection points will vary from wheelchair to wheelchair but the concept is easily adjustable for anyone.
The wheelchair also folds up easier with this cabled footrest.
Supplies
- 1.5in x (2 shoes width + a little extra) flat steel (1/8 in. thick)
- 1/4 in foam, same size as the flat steel
- 3/16 steel cable with plastic coating about 3 feet
- Several U-bolts or crimps to hold the cable in the correct location
- Glue foam to steel plate (we used a piece of foam that already had an adhesive side, otherwise use glue to put them together)
- Drill a hole (bigger than the diameter of the cable) and feed the cable through
- Attach the crimp U-bolt
- Pull the cable through the frame, and then cut the excess cable off
