Background

The story of N1-C0 is an adventure by itself. Originally designed as an imperial maintenance droid, N1-C0 was given all the tools necessary to repair any given part of the ship. Three years into service, an electrical malfunction caused N1-C0 to have his code altered, giving him more freedom. Having watched the fate of the other maintenance droids who stopped working, he decided to escape during a routine stop at Daiyu. Using spare parts found in his new home, N1-C0 gave himself a complete makeover, changing his imperial black for a scarlet red (he thinks it will scare possible threats by having them think its blood) as well as etching the words 'Sith Lord' unto his side, after all, who could even fathom to threaten a Sith Lord? With a newfound purpose, N1-C0 dreams of exploring the galaxy, going on vacation, and not having to work (or fight) another day in his life.

Design and other N1 models

The N1 models are originally equipped with a multitude of tools to facilitate the maintenance of the facilities they are in. From movement utilities such as omni-directional wheels to propulsors on the lower end and rear to reach places of high altitude to a ziplining system that allows them to stabilize and move around at high altitudes, these droids utilize their environment to their advantage, at least when it comes to moving.

The N1 series came as an improvement by the addition of a hologram projector, a thermal scanner, and two flashlights for redundancy. With both these and their almost peripheric vision, they were able to spot even the smallest damages and faults in the ships they were to fix. As for other maintenance tools, they come with a variety of instruments that aid them in their daily life. A chainsaw to cut through material and reach cables, a flamethrower to heat materials to melting point, electrified fingers that work as claws, tasers, and welds; these small robots are packed to the brim with utility so that they can be stationed anywhere.

During his own adventure, N1-C0 gave himself a few upgrades, including a small rocket launcher on the head from a story he was told about a Mandalorian warrior and a satellite dish to be able to receive and send intergalactic signals without problem. He thought of getting himself a small hat, but realized that he might look too conspicuous with it, so he decided against it. He wants his next upgrade to be a small fan to keep him cool in the hot planets.

Notes from the maker

I have been working in this challenge for the past few weeks, having made around three different versions of the droid until I ended up with this one I really enjoyed. As a student, this is the first time I'm using Fusion for a project, but it has been a lot of fun and I feel as I have learned a lot, both in the software and in design. It has been wonderful to be able to work on something I have wanted to do since I was a child, making a droid in the star wars universe, the same way Anakin did in the prequels.

The idea for such a droid came from wanting a small companion that would be able to fix damages in a ship as big as a Star Destroyer when things inevitably go wrong. It was then that I came up with the idea of having a droid originally designed to have no emotions suddenly gaining them, making him kind of a coward, but also having a deep desire to explore the galaxy.

I am very happy with how it turned out and hope you (the viewer) also gets to enjoy N1-C0, maybe you even get to imagine some more of his stories and adventures across the galaxy and the star wars universe.
