Mysteries of the (Di)Pyramids - Fun With A4 Paper

I2 1.jpg

Step 12 of my previous Instructable, (Un)Folding the Mysteries of A4 Paper, hints at the direction of this second in a series, using folded A4 paper. I suggested pausing at that point in the assembly of the Rhombic Dodecahedron to appreciate the hinging action present in the modeling (a "nice little toy"). This current Instructable further examines hinged movement of our linked 'Building Blocks', and proposes just one of an unlimited number of possible linked combinations.

This time, using 8 full sheets of A4 paper, we will see how 8 Dipyramids can be assembled to create yet another hinge-actioned 'toy'. As before, any A size paper can be substituted. The fold pattern, and required tools remain the same. And again, thanks to the 1:√2 proportions of all A series paper, no measuring or cutting tools are needed.

Assemble Tools and Materials

For this project I will be using a thin card stock, stiff enough to make the model a bit sturdier than the last one, but still thin enough to achieve nice crisp creases. The paper I have chosen has a weight of 157 gsm. Otherwise, tools and materials are unchanged: Tape, straight edge, and scoring tool.

Fold

Fold eight sheets to match the pattern shown. For detailed instructions, see https://www.instructables.com/id/UnFolding-the-My...

Fold, form, and tape each sheet to create eight individual Dipyrimids, per steps 8-10, (Un)Folding the Mysteries.

Begin Hinging

Butt two of the 'Blocks' together as shown. Apply tape to create hinging action. Reinforce hinge by applying tape to both sides. Align third block and tape both sides. Repeat to create two hinged groups of three.

Continue Hinging Assembly
