My First Woodcarving:Woody the Adventurer
Woody is a test for me to learn about woodcarving and what was necessary for it. I had decided to carve a game character i had come across that seemed to fit the picture of a first attempt.
Step 1: Take a Picture
Take a picture of what you want to carve. He had a robe and a wizard like hat that seemed easier to do for a first attempt. Take a picture of the front and back so you have something to work with for the carving stage
Step 2: Gather What You Need
You will be needing access to some wood as well as a carving knife and something to protect your hand holding the wood, hopefully a glove at is able to protect you. I went with a chain-mail glove. You will also need a pencil and a power tool.
Step 3: Drawing
attempt to draw a look-alike of the thing you took a picture of. Do this for both the front and a side.
Step 4: Machine Carving
Start by carving the front of your woody and stick to just outside the lines you drew. Once you finish cutting him out make sure to cut off that side drawing and take it to the main carving and carve from a different angle. once this is finished you should have a very rough version of what it looks like.
Step 5: Hand Carving
Now that you have a rough version of what your carving looks like begin carving your woody until it has softened around the edges. You may continue to add details as you wish to it until your finished.
Step 6: Whats Next?
once you have finished to your satisfaction you may either leave it as is, color it, spray it in a protective coating, and place it somewhere in your room to enjoy!
This project took about 4 hours as a first attempt
Enjoy! i found this process to be very relaxing.
