Writing a poem is very fun! Here’s my poem: Click link here or https://docs.google.com/document/d/145jQ61CjoendO...

Here’s how I wrote the poem “My Birth.”

Supplies

  • Paper/google doc
  • Writing utensils
  • Sources you use for researching (like books, internet, etc.)

Research

First, before writing the poem, you need to research how pi came to be and its history. There are many ways to research including reading books, browsing the internet, using primary sources and talking to experts.

Tip: make sure the websites you use are credible.

Decide on the Rhyme Scheme Stanza

Rhyming scheme is how each line rhymes. Some examples are: AABB, ABAB, and ABBA. Lines that rhyme are represented with the same letters. For example, ABAB will mean that the 1st and 3rd lines rhyme and the 2nd and 4th lines rhyme. One way to make 2 lines rhyme is to have the last 3 letters of the last words of the two lines same. In the picture above, the last words of the first two lines (since it is AABB) ‘waiting’ and ‘reckoning’ rhyme because their last 3 letters are the same - ‘ing.’

Equivalent of paragraphs in a poem are stanzas. Traditionally, the size of stanzas are similar. The line lengths should also be similar. This will help the poem flow better.

Tip: try using different schemes first and then choose the one you like best.

Free write and then turn it into a poem. Think about the rhyming scheme while writing. You can first write a sentence and then try to think of rhyming words and use it for the next sentences. Connect all the stanzas and remember to make them of similar size. The rhyming does not need to be with the words, but it can also flow with the sentence/line.

Tip: consider using a different word which is better but has similar meaning (synonym). This can help you rhyme.

Revise and Edit

Read your poem and then check it for any grammatical errors, punctuations or bad rhyming and non flow. Then reread it to double check.

Tip: Read your poem out loud. This will really tell you what it sounds like.
