My Big Playmobil

I have wanted to pay tribute to my traveling companion for a long time. I usually take pictures of my playmobil friend in different places that I visit, yes, like the gnome.

So, let make one but B I G

- A piece of styrofoam

- A styrofoam ball

- Newspaper

- Glue

- Paste (made with flour and water)

- A cutting knife

- Sandpaper

- Ruler and a marker

- A painter's knife and plaster

- a calculator

*Optional: a ginzu 2000 for the curved parts

(I don't know why i took a picture of a masking tape, i didn't used it )

Well, I had a piece of Styrofoam a little over 60 cms. So I did the math for my project to fit with THAT measures.

So, I divided 60 into 7.5 (what the figure measures) and that gave me 8.

I folded a large sheet of paper in half (i had to draw only half of the template)

Then, for every centimetre that the original figure have, i had to multiply by 8, and transfer the result to the piece of Styrofoam.

At the end, I folded the sheet in half and cut it at the same time, so I got a symmetrical template.

Once I had the template ready, I cut it into parts and started to trace it on the styrofoam, with the blade of a cuting knife and the ginzu 2000 to cut the curved parts

I trace and cut the chest of the figure twice to make it more chubby, then I glued it.

I also put parts on his feet.

I held everything down with skewer sticks

For his head, I drew a small circle on the styrofoam ball with a marker. And I began to cut the parts that were left over. I also very carefully traced the arms and hands and cut it.

With the sandpaper i sanded the head and the arms very carefully.

I glued a piece of sandpaper in a stick to made a file for carving the flat parts.

Whenever you make this kind of projects you have to know that you will make a mess, but anyway you can always use the vacuum and a tape.

Yes! I used the masking tape to attract all of the little styrofoam balls and clean my sleeves and pants!

Glue everything together and put more skewer sticks

Now, one of my favorites parts of the process! Put some flour and water paste, freshly made and start to glue little pieces of newspaper. Cut some strips for the body too.

I had to do more carving for the head while i was covering the figure but still got pretty good.

Cover everything with 2 or 3 coats of paper and let it dry overnight.

ok this is the best part.

First i put some glue at the head and chest of the little buddy, then i spread paper mache all over it.

I put a first "layer" of paper mache in the head, because i know that it will take a large amount of paste to make the hair. So it had to be made in two parts.

For the paper mache I ground paper in a blender with a lot of water and squeezed it, then mixed it with glue, paste and cast powder.

is almost there. let it dry

ok. i took some paper mache and spread it with the painter's knife in a piece of plastic bag. Put a little glue in its hand and arm and place the paper over. That way it will be the same thickness in each arm.

Later i put more paper mache at its head and let it dry. You can see the difference at the last 2 pictures.

Now is the time to smooth the body of the figure. With a painter's knife, spread a little plaster. Its better to put too much, it will be ok for sanding later.

here you sand everything and everywhere with sand paper.

So a second mess for your room.

IT is important to pass a wet towel to remove the dust and achieve a better look.

After that, i paint everything white. I also made a little flower for my friend, with styrofoam and newspaper.

Now its time to paint all the details and varnish all.
