Music Tiles With Makey Makey

This project allows you to build a cool tile that plays music when stepped on. Easily constructed, a basic circuit will be turned on and off when pressure is applied, triggering sounds of your choice!

Supplies

You will need:

  1. 2 Foam boards
  2. A large sheet of aluminum foil
  3. Makey Makey
  4. 2 eight-inch wires
  5. Copper tape
  6. 2 alligator clips
  7. 1 sheet of Paper board
  8. 1 sheet of cardstock
  9. Tape
  10. Exacto-knife
  11. USB cable
  12. Markers
  13. Scratch

Connect Foil

Start by ripping the aluminum foil sheet into two. Then, tape one of the aluminum foil sheets onto the foam board so that it covers most of the board,

Tape the other aluminum sheet onto one side of the paper board.

Attach the Wires

Strip an inch off of each end of the wires. Then, tape one end of one wires onto a piece of foil using the copper tape. Repeat with the other wire on the other piece of foil.

Cut the Foam Board

Using the exacto-knife, cut a rectangular hole out of the second foam board. Approximately 7x10 inches, and it should cut out most of the foam board.

Attach Foam to Board

Tape the foam board with the hole in it to the paper board with the aluminum foil facing through the hole.

Tape Together Tile

Making sure that the wires are sticking out the sides, tape together the foam boards, making sure the foil sheets are facing each other on the inside.

Connect Tile to Computer

Attach the alligator clips to the free ends of the wire and the makey makey.

Coding!

Use scratch to have a sound played when the circuit is completed by using a "when space is clicked" and a "play sound".

Finishing Touches

Draw on the cardstock to make the tile pretty and inviting. Then place on top of the tile, and try stepping on it to make some music!
