Multi-colored Wooden Ring With Metal Band
So I made this ring a while ago and really loved how it turned out so I decided to make an Instructable, unfortunately right after I made it I lost it somewhere deep in the bowels of my shop (you know how messy those things can get). Anyways I hope you like it!
Tools/ Materials
Tools
Drill
Bandsaw
Sander
Materials
Wood (Contrasting Colours)
Metal plate
Glue (I used gorilla glue because it provides the best bond between wood and metal)
Polyurethane (or some sort of finish)
Ring Sizing
Use either a ring sizer or simply guess and check with a dremel to get the right size whole for the inside of your ring. Then trace it onto the wood and cut out two ring blanks (rough doughnut shaped pieces of wood), one out of each kind of wood. Don't worry if the pieces don't match perfectly as they will be sanded down together later. Then cut out the same sized blank out of the sheet of metal.
Gluing
Once you have the three roughly equal blanks glue them together with the metal in the middle. Then once they're dry, cut off the extra glue then start sanding down the outer ring.
Sanding
Sand down the outer ring until you have the shape you want. I would suggest a flatter ring rather than one that is more bulbous or circular so that it doesn't press into your hand as much (it makes handshakes very painful).
Finishing
To finish it simply cover it in polyurethane, or the finish you prefer (my cousin is partial to linseed oil but if I'm doing completely wooden projects I prefer olive oil). However, if you are using polyurethane, make sure not to make globs or streaks and to apply it evenly otherwise you'll have lumps or streak marks. Anyways, once that dries you're finished! Now all you have to do is put it to good use. Hope you enjoyed my instructable. If you have any comments or questions please feel free to ask. Thank you and God Bless!
