How to Make Muddy Buddies | Easy Puppy Chow Recipe.jpg

In this Instructable, I will show you how to make muddy buddies also known as "Puppy Chow." This easy puppy chow recipe is very popular here in the United States. It is so popular most Chex boxes have the recipe printed on the back or side of the box. You can add nuts, M&Ms, and other things if you want. Make the holidays bright with this yummy snack. But remember don't feed muddy buddies puppy chow to the dogs, lol. So easy to make with simple ingredients, if I can do it, you can do it. Let's get started!

Ingredients:

  • 9 cups of rice or corn Chex (any flavor) (278g)
  • 1 cup chocolate chips, semi-sweet, milk chocolate, dark chocolate (170g)
  • 1/4 cup butter, salted or unsalted (56g)
  • 1/2 cup smooth peanut butter (120g)
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract (5ml)
  • 1 1/2 to 2 cups powdered sugar, doesn't have to be exact (180 to 240g)
  • M&Ms, Nuts, etc., optional

Tools:

  • Microwave-safe bowl or pot
  • Very large bowl
  • Spatula
  • Large plastic bag, optional
  • Lid for the bowl, optional

The Chex

Measure out the Rice Chex or you can also use corn Chex and place in a large bowl. It is just a few cups shy of the whole standard box, here in the States. You can also use the other flavors of Chex or a combination of them. They have chocolate and peanut butter Chex as well.

Melt the Ingredients

Now add the chocolate chips, butter, and peanut butter to a microwave-safe bowl. Melt in the microwave using bursts of 30 seconds on high, and then stirring, until it is all melted and smooth.

Then mix in the vanilla extract.

NOTE: If you don't want to use a microwave, you can melt everything in a pot on the stovetop or use the double boiler method on the stovetop as well.

Coat the Chex

Now pour the melted chocolate mixture over the bowl of Chex. Use a spatula to stir until the Chex are evenly coated with the chocolate mixture.

You can add the chocolate Chex to a bag and then add the powdered sugar and shake it to coat them, or leave them in the large bowl and just stir the powdered sugar with the Chex. Also, if you have a lid for the bowl, put the lid on and then shake it that way, a few options that you can try.

Once covered they are ready. Super easy right? Place in a serving bowl and enjoy!
