Mounted PS4 Controller Charger

I am a high school student at Ars Vitae Academy. I created this project as a way to conveniently store, charge, and access my PS4 controller without cluttering my desk.

Supplies

Tools:

  • 3D printer
  • drill and drill bits

Materials:

  • filament
  • micro USB cable
  • 2x countersunk screws (head of the screw must be larger than 4 mm smaller than 7 mm)
  • vinyl sticker (optional)
  • sandpaper (optional)

Designing the Dock

The cradle of the dock was created by subtracting the shape of the PS4 controller from a rectangular prism. The model of the controller was provided by Davide Lambertini on GrabCAD. Then a channel was cut for the USB cord with a cover that slides over it to secure the cord. Keyhole mounts on the back of the dock allow it to be mounted to a surface. Final touches were added by smoothing out the surfaces and widening the cradle so that the controller would fit more easily. You will not need to repeat this process as you can download the STL files (links provided in the Supplies List).

Slicing and Printing

Download the STL files provided in the materials list and import them into your favorite slicer. Slice the files as appropriate for your printer, set up your printer, and print the parts. Clean the printed parts if necessary.

Push the cable into the channel on the bottom of the dock until the cable is fully seated and the connector is exposed on the other side.

Slide the cord cover over the cable and into the channel. Hot glue can be used to further secure the cord if you find it moves too much.

Check to make sure the controlling slides easily into the dock. The dock can then be sanded smooth, or you can line the inside of the dock with a vinyl sticker.

Mounting

You will need to drill two pilot holes 3.5cm apart where you plan to mount the dock. Put the screws in place and tighten until only the head is above the surface. Slide the dock onto the screws using the keyhole mounts. Adjust the screws until the dock is snug against the surface. Finally, plug the dock into a power source. It is now ready to use.
