I needed to securely bundle a new wiring harness for my classic car. This tool makes it fast, accurate and easy.

It delivers a lot of torque - both hands are needed to control/manage/feed the wire bundle through the tool. The addition of a foot switch (included) makes using this significantly easier!

Supplies

  1. 3D Printer
  2. ASA or ABS filament recommended, however PLA will work
  3. Philips Screwdriver
  4. Hex Key (for drive pulley)
  5. Heat shrink tubing
  6. 8” Tie Wrap

Printing the Components

Handle

The handle is exposed to considerable torque demands, so should be printed with:

  1. Layer Height: 0.2 or 0.3 mm
  2. Top & Bottom Layers: 4 or 5
  3. Perimeter layers 4 or 5
  4. Fill 50 to 70%
  5. Material: ABS, ASA or optionally, PLA
  6. Supports: From baseplate (primarily for the inset nuts on
  7. the underside of the handle)

Tape Spinner & Tape Screw Cap

  1. Layer Height: 0.2 or 0.3 mm
  2. Top & Bottom Layers: 4 or 5
  3. Perimeter layers 4 or 5
  4. Fill 30-50%

  2. Top & Bottom Layers: 3 or 4
  3. Perimeter layers 3 or 4
  4. Fill 15-20%
  5. Material: PLA
  6. Supports: Everywhere

100% Infill Areas

Where to Infill.png

IMPORTANT: There are several areas of the handle that should be printed at 100% infill as indicated by the circles in this image.

These are areas that will be subjected to extra stress during assembly and use.

Install Drive Gear Onto Motor

Motor_Gear_Assy.png

Reference BOM and drawing DWG-1013.

Install the GT2-6 Drive Pulley (5) onto the motor (4) shaft. It should slide all the way down to where it hits the motor. Back it off just a tiny bit.

Tighten one setscrew onto the ‘flat’ of the motor shaft. Then tighten the second set screw.

Attach Motor to Handle

Motor to handle.png

Attach the motor/drive Pulley assembly to the underside of the handle (1) using the 4 M3 x 12 screws (6).

The motor shaft and drive Pulley should be perfectly aligned with the large hole in the handle.

Leave the screws loose for now.

Install Idler Pulleys

First 4 pulleys.png

Install the four idler Pulleys (8) closest to the motor and along one edge using the M4 x 20 screws (7) and M4 nuts (9).

Do not install the last two pulleys.

Install Drive Belt

Next two pullies.png

Route the drive belt (10) around the two idler Pulleys and the drive Pulley.

Install Final Idler Pulleys

Final 2 idler pullies.png

Slide the Tape Spinner (2) up against the belt and into the four idler Pulleys.

Install the remaining two idler Pulleys.

It is helpful if you manually turn the Tape Spinner such the gap is pointing at the Pulley you are trying to mount.

Finish-up and Wiring

WireWrapAroundMotor.png

Tighten the 4 screws that hold the motor.

There are slots to allow for some minor adjustment of the motor to ensure sufficient tension.

Extend the motor wires such that they are long enough to reach the foot pedal.

Solder a Barrel Jack (12) to the far end of the wire.

Cover all solder joints with heat shrink tubing.

Use the tie wrap to securely hold the motor wires against the motor body to prevent damage to where the wires connect to the motor should the cord get snagged.

The Foot Pedal

FootSwitch_Top_Oblique_no_cover.png

Reference drawing DWG-1013.

Solder two wires to the switch (15).

Insert the switch into the Foot Switch Base (13) and install the mounting nut securely.

Solder Barrel Jacks

FootSwitch_Top_no_cover.png

Solder the switch and jacks per DWG-1013.

Insert the barrel jacks through the holes and secure with the nut.

Note: wiring is not shown in this image

Add Lid

Align the Foot Switch Lid (14) over the hinge pins and press firmly to seat.
