Morphing Pumpkin Patch
Yikes! It’s Halloween night and something strange is happening down in the pumpkin patch. The pumpkins are morphing into scary witches, vampire bats, lively frogs, black cats, and creepy spiders! Why not create a pumpkin patch and morph your own favorite Halloween characters? Happy morphing!
Materials needed:
Sculpey III Oven-Bake Clay – orange, black, brown, red, yellow, green, pink, purple, white
Sculpey Gloss Glaze
wooden craft box (12" x 10")
assortment of clay tools
acrylic roller
slicer blade
aluminum foil
glass baking dish (use only for clay)
3 paintbrushes – detail brush, 1" wide brush, fan brush
acrylic paint- beige and raw sienna
glue

Morphing Witch:
Witch's pumpkin body:
1. Roll up a 3" egg-shaped ball of aluminum foil and flatten bottom.
2. Roll out a large piece of orange clay to a thickness of ¼".
3. Wrap orange clay around foil egg and cut off excess clay. Smooth into egg shape.
4. Using a clay tool, make vertical lines in the pumpkin as shown.
Witch's pumpkin body:
1. Roll up a 3" egg-shaped ball of aluminum foil and flatten bottom.

Witch’s hat:
Roll out a piece of black clay. Using a slicer blade, cut a 2" circle for hat brim and roll out a 3" cone for the crown.
With your fingers, smooth the hat brim to the crown.
Roll out a piece of purple clay and cut out a thin hat band. Add to hat.
Set hat on top of witch's pumpkin body and smooth clay to attach.
Roll out a piece of black clay. Using a slicer blade, cut a 2" circle for hat brim and roll out a 3" cone for the crown.
With your fingers, smooth the hat brim to the crown.
Roll out a piece of purple clay and cut out a thin hat band. Add to hat.
Set hat on top of witch's pumpkin body and smooth clay to attach.
Witch’s face:
Add white eyes with black pupils, black eyebrows, a green nose with wart, and a red mouth with white teeth.

Witch’s arms and hands:
Using black clay, roll 2 small cones (2 ½") for the arms.
Using green clay, make witches hands and add tiny red clay balls to form fingernails.
Attach hands onto ends of the witch's arms and then attach arms to either side of pumpkin body.
Smooth clay at the joint.

Witch's stockings (legs):
Roll out a 2 ½" purple snake and a 2 ½" green snake.
Using the slicer blade, cut small pieces of purple and green clay and put alternating colors together to form two striped stockings.
Roll gently until the 2 legs hold together.

Witch's shoes:
Using black clay, shape two shoes as shown and add a small yellow buckle.
Attach shoes to legs and smooth at joint.
Then attach legs to witch's pumpkin body as shown.

Bake:
Gently place witch in a glass baking dish (only use for clay).
Bake according to the directions on the clay's package.
After baking, allow witch to cool and then glaze if desired.

Morphing Spiders:
Spider's pumpkin body:
Roll orange clay into a ball, then score the ball like a pumpkin with a clay tool.
Add green stem and vines, eyes, and eyebrows as shown.

Roll 4 thin snakes and gently squeeze together in the middle.
Smooth legs onto the bottom of the spider's body and then gently curve the legs as shown.
Legs should support body.

Bake:
Put the spiders in the glass baking dish.
Follow baking directions on the clay's package, then cool and glaze if desired.

Morphing Frog:
Frog's pumpkin body: Roll orange clay into a ball, then score the ball like a pumpkin with a clay tool.
Frog's face:
Roll 2 green balls, 2 white balls, and 2 small black balls (pupils) for the eyes.
Attach to pumpkin body as shown.
Using a clay tool, make a mouth and line it with a very thin piece of red clay.

Morphing Bat:
Bat's pumpkin body: Roll out a small orange oval and score pumpkin lines on it with a clay tool.
Bat's head:
Roll out a small black ball and pinch top of the ball to form the bat's ears.
Attach bat's head to the pumpkin body by smoothing at the joint.
Bat's eyes:
Roll small yellow balls for eyes and tiny black balls for pupils and press onto bat's head.
Bat's mouth:
Using a clay tool, make a circle to form bat's mouth. Line inside of mouth with a tiny ball of red clay.
Bat's pumpkin body: Roll out a small orange oval and score pumpkin lines on it with a clay tool.
Bat's head:
Roll out a small black ball and pinch top of the ball to form the bat's ears.
Attach bat's head to the pumpkin body by smoothing at the joint.
Bat's eyes:
Roll small yellow balls for eyes and tiny black balls for pupils and press onto bat's head.
Bat's mouth:
Using a clay tool, make a circle to form bat's mouth. Line inside of mouth with a tiny ball of red clay.
Bat's wings: Roll out a small piece of black clay. Using the slicer blade, cut out 2 bat's wings as shown and gently smooth onto each side of the bat's body.
Bat's feet: Roll 2 tiny black balls, flatten, and attach to the bottom of the bat's body.

Bake:
Place bat in the glass baking dish.
Bake bat as directed on the clay's package. Cool and glaze if desired.

Morphing Cat:
Cat's pumpkin body:
Roll an orange oval, tilt it, and flatten bottom as shown.
Score pumpkin lines using a clay tool.
Cat's head:
Roll a black ball and smooth it onto the top of cat's pumpkin body.

Roll an orange oval, tilt it, and flatten bottom as shown.

Cat's face:
Add eyes, ears, nose, and 2 small black balls on either side of the nose as shown.
Using a clay tool, make a mouth in the clay below the nose.

Front and back legs:
Roll 2 short black snakes for the front legs. Roll 2 longer black snakes for the back legs.
Attach as shown and smooth to pumpkin body.
Flatten ends of legs to make paws.
Cat's tail:
Roll a black snake for the tail.
Attach tail to the back of the cat by smoothing clay at the joint.
Bend tail so that the tip points up.
Roll 2 short black snakes for the front legs. Roll 2 longer black snakes for the back legs.
Attach as shown and smooth to pumpkin body.
Flatten ends of legs to make paws.

Attach tail to the back of the cat by smoothing clay at the joint.
Bend tail so that the tip points up.
Bake:
Place the cat in the glass baking dish.
Bake cat following the directions on the clay's package. Cool and then glaze if desired.

Morphing Owl on Tree Stump:
Tree Stump:
Roll brown clay into the shape of a log.
Using a clay tool, make lines on the log to resemble tree bark.
Owl:
Roll orange clay into a ball, then score the ball like a pumpkin with a clay tool.
Add eyes, beak, wings, and feet as shown.
Carefully perch owl on the upright tree stump.
Smooth until the owl is securely attached.
With clay tool, score wings to resemble feathers.
Tree Stump:
Roll brown clay into the shape of a log.
Using a clay tool, make lines on the log to resemble tree bark.
Owl:
Roll orange clay into a ball, then score the ball like a pumpkin with a clay tool.
Add eyes, beak, wings, and feet as shown.

Smooth until the owl is securely attached.
With clay tool, score wings to resemble feathers.
Bake:
Place owl in the glass baking dish.
Bake owl following the directions on the clay's package.
Cool and then glaze if desired.

Morphing Haunted Tree:
Roll 1 long snake of black clay and 1 long snake of brown clay.
Twist the 2 snakes together, fold in half, and roll until the 2 snakes are blended together.

Shape into a tree by first forming a thick trunk and then twisting the remaining clay into 3 branches as shown.
Hole in tree:
Using a clay tool, hollow out a tree hole.
Eyes:
Roll 2 small yellow eyes and then add 2 black pupils.
Carefully insert eyes in tree hole.

Place tree in the glass baking dish.
Bake tree as directed on the clay's package.

Pumpkin vines and leaves:
Vines:
Roll out long, thin green snakes.
Loop and curl snakes to resemble vines.
Pumpkin leaves:
Roll out a flat piece of green clay.
Using the slicer blade, cut out little leaves.
Attach to pumpkin vines.
Using a clay tool, score leaves to resemble leaf veins.
Bake:
Place vines and leaves in the glass baking dish.
Bake vines and leaves as directed on the clay's package.
Cool and then glaze if desired.
Vines:
Roll out long, thin green snakes.
Loop and curl snakes to resemble vines.
Pumpkin leaves:
Roll out a flat piece of green clay.
Using the slicer blade, cut out little leaves.
Attach to pumpkin vines.
Using a clay tool, score leaves to resemble leaf veins.
Bake:
Place vines and leaves in the glass baking dish.
Bake vines and leaves as directed on the clay's package.
Cool and then glaze if desired.
Finishing instructions:
1. Turn the craft box over and paint the bottom and sides with beige paint.
While the paint is still wet, take the fan brush and dip it into the raw sienna paint.
Holding the fan brush vertically, make gentle cross-hatching strokes across the wet paint. Allow to dry.
2. Arrange the morphing pumpkin characters, tree, tree stump, and vines as shown.
3. Glue the baked clay pieces onto the craft box.
