Lately I have been experimenting with crochet and paint, so for this Instructable I chose to show how I used crochet to make my painting of the moon and clouds at night look more 3d and to incorporate crochet with paint. If you choose to do another picture I would pick one that is simple, and to pick what you crochet, pick the pieces in the picture that you want to stick out.

Here are the abbreviations of the stitches I used :

Sc: single crochet
Inc: increase

Dc: double crochet

Dec: decrease

BLO: back loop only

Supplies

  • Light grey and white embroidery thread
  • White, light blue, blue, dark blue, and black paint
  • Paint brushes
  • 1.75 and 0.9 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Glue gun
  • 4 by 4 canvas

Making the Crochet Moon

To make the moon use the white embroidery thread and the 0.90 mm hook:

Start with a magic ring with 6 stitches. Then increase around the 6 stitches so then there are 12 stitches. After that single crochet and increase around the 12 stitches so that there are then 18 stitches. Then single crochet twice, and increase around the 18 stitches so that there are a total of 24 stitches. For the last row single crochet 3 times and increase around the 24 stitches so that there are a total of 30 stitches.

The First Cloud

Making the first cloud (use grey embrodery thread and a 1.75 mm crochet hook):

Start by making a chain of 20 stitches. Then single crochet in the 20 stitches. After that single crochet in 14 out of the 20 stitches and turn, then decrease in the first stitch and single crochet in the next 12 stitches. Single crochet in 9 of the 13 stitches then turn and decrease in the first stitch and then single crochet in the next 7 stitches. The last thing you have to do is single crochet around the side and bottom of the cloud and fasten off. Once done hide all the loose ends.

The Second Cloud

Making the second cloud (use grey embrodery thread and a 1.75 mm crochet hook):

Start by making a chain of 15 stitches, and then single crochet in the 15 stitches. After that single crochet in 9 of the 15 stitches and turn your work, then decrease in the first stitch and single crochet in the next 7 stitches. The last thing you have to do is single crochet around the side and bottom of the cloud and then fasten off and hide all loose ends.

The Third Cloud

Making the third cloud (use grey embrodery thread and a 1.75 mm crochet hook):

Start by making a chain of 17 stitches then turn your work and half double crochet in 6 of the stitches, then double crochet in 5 of the stitches, and half double crochet in the last 2 stitches. Then turn your work again and decrease in the first stitch, single crochet in one stitch, double crochet in the next 3 stitches, and single crochet in the last stitch. The last thing you have to do is single crochet around the side and bottom of the cloud and then fasten off and hide all loose ends.

The Fourth Cloud

Making the fourth cloud (use grey embrodery thread and a 1.75 mm crochet hook):

Start by making a chain of 15 stitches then turn your work and double crochet in the first 10 stitches then single crochet in the next 2 stitches and turn, in the next row decrease in the first stitch, single crochet in the next, double crochet in the next 3 stitches, slip stitch in 2 stitches, and double crochet in the last 3 stitches. The last thing you have to do is single crochet around the side and bottom of the cloud and then fasten off and hide all loose ends.

The Fifth Cloud

Making the fifth cloud (use grey embrodery thread and a 1.75 mm crochet hook):

Start by making a chain of 10 stitches then turn your work and double crochet in five of the stitches and half double crochet in two. Then turn again, decrease in the first stitch, double crochet in the next 2 stitches slip stitch and then double crochet in the last two stitches. The last thing you have to do is single crochet around the side and bottom of the cloud and then fasten off and hide all loose ends.

The first picture above is the painting I chose to recreate and add crochet to. To make the painting start by painting a white and light blue circle in the middle of the canvas and then use the dark blue and the black near the edge. Once you do that try to blend the colors together. Then sprinkle white paint on the canvas to create stars. Once the background is done you can glue the crochet pieces to the canvas, and you can also paint the pieces so that they look like they are part of the painting as I did in the pictures above by using paint to shade the clouds and moon so that they would blend better into the painting. For the clouds I painted a lining around them of a cloud so that they looked more like three dimensional clouds.
