Monster Bag

This bag looks innocuous until you open it. Then, it develops teeth and bites you!

Decide what size and shape you want your bag to be. My bag has a rectangular front and back, a rectangular bottom, and sides that get narrower toward the top.

Remember that the angled sides need to be the same length as the long side of the front.

The bag will need a flap to hide the teeth.

I used an old pair of jeans for the outside of the bag, and black fake fur for the inside.

I also used a piece of thin striped fabric for the inside of the flap.

For the outside, you need to cut:
1 bottom, 1 front, 1 back, 2 sides, and 1 flap. (I made the flap the same size as the front of the bag.)

(And 1 flap from contrasting material.)

For the inside, you need to cut:
1 bottom, 1 front, 1 back, and 2 sides.

Leave some space around the pattern piece when you cut it out, and mark the outline of the pattern piece on the wrong side of the fabric. (Use white chalk or similar on dark fabric.)

Get the two flap pieces, put them right sides together, and pin them.

Now sew around three sides, leaving the top open. I curved the two bottom corners.

Make small cuts from the edge of the fabric up to the seam around the two corners (this helps the extra fabric lie flat).

Then turn the flap right side out.

I didn't bother, but you could iron the flap if you wanted to.

First, pin and sew the flap to the back of the outside of the bag. The outside part of the flap needs to be against the right side of the back piece.

Otherwise, you can sew the pieces together in any order you like. At this point, you're making two bags - one furry one and one denim one.

Always pin the fabric with the right sides together. (For the fur fabric, that's furry sides together. For the denim, the right side is the outside.) 

Sew along the lines you traced on the fabric.

When you're done, turn both bags right side out.

Open the flap so it hangs down the back of the outside of the bag.

Pin the furry bag along the back, and if you can, along the sides matching up all the seams.

Sew the two bags together along the pinned section. (With the sewing machine if you're using one.)

Then, push the furry bag inside the outer bag.

Fold the raw edges inside along the front, and sew the furry lining to the outer bag by hand.

I used white craft foam for the teeth, but you could also use felt.

Cut out some triangles, then use a whip stitch to sew them to the furry lining an inch or so inside the bag.
