Momma's Kitchen Table

We moved fro a 3400+ sq ft house to appx 900 sq ft and our kitchen table was to big for the eating area.

Sooo Momma wanted to buy one but we didn't like anything we seen so I had her give me some basic ideas of what she wanted and off I went one weekend while she was at work.

I took a 1X6 and ripped it down into 1 piece 3 1/8 inches and another 2 3/8 inches to form a 3 1/8 X 3 1/8 L shaped legs 28 inches long finished length.

Form the 2 pieces into an L shape and clamp. Pilot drilled 1/8 inch holes to prevent the wood from splitting and to mark so when pulled apart you can drill the long board deeper to prevent splitting.

Pulled apart, drilled pilot holes deeper then changed bits to a 3/8" put stop collar on to prevent from drilling to deep. set it for appx 3/8" deep.

Drilled 5 holes, first 2 were an inch from each end, then 1 in the middle then split them again.

Put Gorilla wood glue on the joint, lined up 2 end holes and used 3" # 10 construction screws to hold together.

Next is to take doll rod or plugs and glue in the holes. What ever type of wood you would like to use. If you want to put some style in it and show off the legs use some cherry or oak plugs.

I attached the legs using 5/16" carriage bolts, 2 per leg to make it sturdy.

I wanted a table top of 34" x 38"

I used 1x10's to make the top.

I cut four 1x10's 38" long, then set the saw to rip a little off of each side to have straight sides to end up with 3 boards of 9 1/4" wide by 38" long.

The 4th board I cut into 3 strips 2 3/4" wide.

Next I drilled holes for dowel pins to keep everything aligned.

I used gorilla glue to hold everything tight.

So now it is the glue and clamp process and I only had 1 clamp to reach all the way and a frame strap so that what I used to hold everything together.

While the glue was drying I made the sub frame out of 2x3's, wanting a finished size of 29 x 34 and something sturdy to attach the legs to. (sorry no pics)

To put the top on the frame I pre drilled the holes using a stop collier to recess the screws and to allow them to go in just far enough but not to far to go through the top of the table. Keep in mind you don't need to have the screws hold the frame, you just want to hold the top to the frame, so drill the holes in the frame so the screw won't catch.

I took some 1x4's ripped them to 1 1/2", and used then made my trim.

By setting the saw to 3/4" deep and making a cut 1/4" in from the side.

Next set the saw 1/4 inch deep and set the guide 3/4" to create an L shape cut in the boards.

use a miter box to cut your trim or as I did I just staggered the ends so you could see the shape of the cuts

I used glue and my air nailer to attach the trim

I used Golden pecan stain.

Rub it on with a rag and you can leave it or wipe the excess off, your choice. I wipe it off so it dries faster and you get a more even color.
