Modular Origami Egg Cup

DSC02323.JPG

Surely everyone is familiar with the origami swan.

If not, you have to google it - it is a work of art.

This egg cup is based on the modules used for the swan, they are the most versatile unit currently in origami.

To make this cup you will need about 92 units at least! But don't be scared, you can get up to 32 units out of a single piece of paper!

Go to step two to learn how to make the units.

Preparing to Make the Units.

You need to do this step in order to prepare the paper for cutting and folding.

First you need to fold a sheet of A4 paper in half both ways.

Next you have to fold the two ends in to make quarters like shown in the fourth photo.

This is a good size to learn how to make the modules on.

Go to step 2 to make the modules.

This is the most repetitive step, you have to do it at least 92 times in order to create a large-ish model.

Take your rectangle you just cut and fold it in half like shown in the second photo.

Now you need to fold it in half the other way like shown in photo three.

Unfold the latest half-fold, this is just a pre-crease.

Now take each end individually and fold it down diagonally like you are making a paper plane, the result should look like photos 4 and 5 respectively.

Once that is done you need to take the outer corners and fold them up like shown in photos 5 and 6.

It is now time to flip the model over.

Take the tabs that stick out and fold them over, locking the original folds in place, the result should look like photos 7 and 8.

Now take the unit and fold it in half so the last folds you did are on the inside.

You have made your first unit.

The unit should have two "tabs" and two "pockets".

Repeat this 91 times and then move on!

Building Time :)

It is now time to assemble the model.

To start you need to take two units and push them together, one unit's tab into the other unit's pocket.

Repeat this until you end u with two circles, each containing twelve (12) units.

Now it is time to build out - you are only going to be able to build out for a certain amount of rings until the model closes up and then you will start to build the model upwards.

To build the third ring you have to join each set of two units by taking two tabs, one tab belongs to unit "A" and the other tab belongs to unit "B" you need to join the tabs with unit "C" and then repeat the process twelve (12) times or until you have a full circle.

When the egg cup is the desired size, you can stop building!

Have fun with your new model, you can easily pull it apart and transform it into something else - let your imagination run wild!
