Modular Origami Castle

G0070572.JPG

I saw this in an origami book a few years ago when I started getting into origami. It was titled "Bluebeard's Castle" and looked like this:

The concept is pretty simple, you build a bunch of little boxes and build a castle. Just like building a wooden block castle, except you spend a few minutes putting together each block. This project will take about 6 hours to complete if you work at it continuously, but may vary depending on experience. Although it got frustrating or boring at times, I had a lot of fun. I think if you have the right attitude and a few snacks, you can have fun with it as well. If you feel like giving up, just remind yourself that a 16-year-old boy on crutches did it.

I spent a lot of time making this Instructable, and I ran into just about every problem possible. The GoPro I used to record some of the footage takes absolutely enormous videos, some of them being over a gigabyte. Because of this, the videos are too big to remove the audio. I recommend listening to the videos without audio, as there is likely lots of background noise. Thanks!

Supplies

Paper - Any square paper will work, but make sure you have a lot of it (like 150 sheets). Having 2 or more colors is recommended to separate the castle from its roofs.

Altoids (optional) - A tin of Altoids will last you a day if you eat one every 10 minutes or so, and can keep you from losing your sanity when folding the same thing 75 times over and over again.

Module 1

This castle is build out of little modules that, when put together, will form a castle. This first module is the one you will be spending most of your time on. You can watch a video that I've made here or refer to the steps above.

These are going to be the main building block for your castle, so you will need quite a lot of them. The castle I made used up around 75 of them, so I would recommend aiming for a number somewhere in that range. As you continuously fold these modules, you will progressively get faster at it. I can pump out about 25 an hour, but it can vary depending on paper size, hand size, experience, etc.

Build Your Castle

Now is the time to take all the little module 1's and put them together to form your castle. Don't worry about the tops of the towers or the extra towers that jut out from the side, focus only on the main structure for now. You can view an epic time-lapse of me making my castle here.

For information on how the modules can connect, please watch this video here.

Module 2

These modules are for attaching extra towers that jut out from your castle. You won't need too many of them, maybe about 2-8. When you are done making them, attach them to your castle, along with a few module 1's.

Watch my video here, or refer to the steps above.

Module 3

These modules are to give pointy roofs to your towers. To decide how many you need, just take a look at your castle so far. If there's a spot that looks like it could use a pointy top, then it needs a pointy top. Watch my video here or refer to the image below:

You're Done!

Take a step back and admire your beautiful work, you're done! Set your new castle on a shelf for display, or make a paper army and have a battle. I hope you thoroughly enjoyed this project as much as I did, and I hope you have an amazing week. Thanks!
