Modified 3 C Cell Maglite

IMG_0692.JPG

I have an addiction to flashlights. The brighter and smaller the better. I had some 26650 A123 cells left over from an electric bike project. These Lithium Iron Phosphate cells have higher voltage so one equals two C cells in voltage. Add some modifications and the Maglite C can use the same bulb as the D cell lights and easily run at 7.2volts in a 3 C cell light.

Supplies

Maglite 3 C cell flashlight. 22 gauge brass wire. 4 to 18volt LED bulb. A123 26650 Cells. Bicycle innertube.

Modifying the Parts

Stretch the spring that contacts the batteries. Two 26650 batteries are slightly shorter than three C cell alkaline. Ream the reflector. This will allow a larger bulb to be used. Solder contacts made of 22 gauge brass wire on the positive and negative terminals of the bulb. Insert into the bulb connector making sure to check polarity. Find the focus point and use a bicycle innertube to hold the reflector cage to the flashlight if the focus point is beyond the thread limit. Use the end cap as your switch.

You Now Have Your Flashlight Modified to Accept Inexpensive and Robust Batteries.

Make sure the spring makes contact with the end cap, so you have a switch.
