I recently wrote an instructable on how to design and 3D print a modern dining set for Sylvanian Families and I had a lot of fun making it so I thought I'd have a bash at doing them a nice matching kitchen too!

Everything here was designed from scratch using Tinkercad and here is a link to the project in case you want to have a look. Playing around with the project is a great way to visualise a layout too!

There are quite a lot of steps to this build already so I'm not going to go into the design process here but if anyone does want to know how anything was designed, let me know in the comments and I'll write up a separate instructable detailing the process!

I really wanted to make something easy to print that doesn't need any additional hardware like hinges etc. and I also wanted to make it as modular as possible so you can mix and match the pieces and make it your own!

As there are quite a lot of pieces, I've made a step for each model so you can just jump to the bits you need and I've popped a link back to here in each step too!

Step 1: Counters

Step 2: Sink

Step 3: Overhead Cabinets

Step 4: Fridge-Freezer

Step 5: Oven

Step 6: Dishwasher

Step 7: Microwave

Step 8: Build Your Kitchen!

I believe Sylvanian Families are 1:16 scale but I know they're not always to scale with their furniture and this was built to suit the models so may need a little adjusting if you're printing for a doll's house etc.

All versions of the Large, Small and Corner Counters pictured use exactly the same process so rather than put you through me repeating myself, I've lumped them together - just print the 'large' files for large, 'small' files for small and 'corner' files for corner!

The counter tops, doors and counters are separate pieces both for ease of printing and so you can just print in the colours you want the end result to be - no need to paint!

STLs are included below or can be exported from the tinkercad project :)

To make any Counter with Shelves you'll need to print:

  • 1 Counter (no door)
  • 1 Counter Top

To make any cabinet with doors you'll need to print:

  • 1 Counter (normal doors)
  • 1 Counter Top
  • 1 of each Door available (The Corner Counter only uses 1 door!)

Printing Advice:

I won't give you settings or gcode as it varies so much between machines, filaments, slicers etc. that it'd be potentially dangerous for me to do that!

I can tell you that every part of this should print with no supports or raft if you just lay them flat on their backs

I used PLA but if you'll be giving these to a young child, consider printing in PETg so they're less likely to break and can withstand a bit of heat so can be washed properly.

Once printed, you may also want to use a hand drill to ensure any holes are clear - I'd recommend a 1.8mm bit though I used a 2mm bit as my 1.8mm one snapped on a previous project and it worked just fine.

To Assemble:

To avoid using extra hardware, these models have been designed to use filament as hinges where required

  • If making a cabinet with doors - attach the doors before attaching the counter top (check out the second pic to see this - I made the pieces transparent and the filament is shown in orange to help visualise it!)
    • Take a length of filament (I used the same stuff I printed in so it would blend in)
    • Pass it through the hole in the top of the counter
    • Then through the hole in the corresponding door
    • Then through the hole in the bottom of the counter
    • Repeat for the other door
    • Trim any excess filament from the top and bottom of the cabinet and glue if necessary but take care not to glue the door in place!!
  • If you're making shelves, or once your doors are in place, attach the counter top!
    • The counter top should have small slots that line up with the tabs on the back of the counter
    • Place a small amount of glue on the underneath of your counter top
    • Place the counter top on top of the counter and slide it into place so the tabs fit neatly inside the slots

Sink

STLs for the sink are included below or can be exported from the tinkercad project :)

To make the sink you will need to print:

  • 1 Sink Counter
  • 1 Sink Counter Top
  • 1 Sink
  • 1 Tap

Printing Advice:

I covered all of the important general advice in the counters step but here's some advice specific to this model:

  • You will need supports - this is the only model where I just couldn't avoid supports!
    • The sink and tap both have overhangs that will not print without supports. They should both print fine using only supports from build plate though!

To Assemble:

  • First you'll need to attach the doors.
    • Simply pass a piece of filament through the hole in the top of the counter, through the door and out the hole in the bottom of the counter, trim any excess and repeat for the other door.
  • Once the doors are attached, you can add the Counter Top
    • Place a few dabs of glue on the underside of the counter top and place it on top of the counter, ensuring the tabs fit neatly into the slots
  • Next add your sink
    • Dab some glue on the underside of the sink
    • This should now just slot nicely into the hole in the counter top and counter!
  • Finally add your tap!
    • Dab a small amount of glue on the underside of the tap
    • Carefully place it so it's centred with the bowl of the sink.

Overhead Units

20210518_180514.jpg

I designed 3 overhead units but they all use pretty much the same process so I've bundled them together in one step!

STLs are below or you can export from the tinkercad project - you have the overhead shelves pictured on the left, overhead cabinet in the centre and the overhead dish rack on the right! :)

To make the Overhead Shelves or Overhead Dish Rack, you will just need to print the file of that name

To make the Overhead Cabinet you will need to print:

  • 1 Overhead Cabinet
  • 1 Overhead Left Door
  • 1 Overhead Right Door

Printing Advice - for general advice, check out what was covered in the counters step - there's nothing I need to add to that for this particular model!

To Assemble:

  • If you're making the Overhead Cabinet, you'll need to attach the doors first!
    • Simply pass a piece of filament through the hole in the top of the unit, through the door and out the hole in the bottom, trim and repeat for the other door.
  • For the other units or once you've got the doors in place, you need to attach your overhead unit to the large cabinet of your choice (this includes the sink - I made sure it would fit!)
You'll need to be a bit careful lining these pieces up as there are no tabs/slots!
    • Run a small amount of glue along the bottom of your overhead unit.
    • Lay both the unit and cabinet on their backs on a flat surface and press them together (this ensures they line up perfectly but be careful they don't stick to your surface!!)
    • To make sure they line up in all directions you can run a flat object like a ruler along the sides of both pieces as well - just be careful not to glue it to your unit!

Fridge-Freezer

Capture.PNG
20210518_180523.jpg

STLs are below or you can export from the tinkercad project :)

To make the Fridge-Freezer you'll need to print:

  • 1 Fridge Freezer Back
  • 1 Fridge Door
  • 1 Freezer Door

Printing Advice - for general advice, check out what was covered in the counters step but here's some advice specific to this model:

If you want the door handles to be a different colour to the doors, you can do a filament change at 4.2mm or layer 21 if you're printing at the standard .2mm layer height - check out CHEP's tutorial if you don't already know how to do this!

To Assemble:

  • All you need to do is attach the doors! (check out the pictures for guidance!)
    • Take a piece of filament long enough to run along the whole Fridge Freezer Back
    • Pass the filament through the hole in the tab at the top of the Fridge Freezer Back
    • Then pass it all the way through the freezer door
    • Continue passing it through the tab in the middle of the Fridge Freezer Back
    • Then pass it all the way through the fridge door
    • Finally, pass the filament through the bottom tab on the Fridge Freezer Back
    • Trim any excess filament

Oven

Capture.PNG
20210518_180645.jpg

STLs are below or you can export from the tinkercad project :)

To make the Oven you'll need to print:

  • Small Counter (fold down door)
  • Small Counter Top
  • Oven Door
  • Hob
  • (Optional) Oven Hood

Printing Advice - for general advice, check out what was covered in the counters step but here's some advice specific to this model:

To print the hob plates and knobs in a different colour to the rest, you can do a filament change at 1.6mm or layer 8 if you're printing at the standard .2mm layer height - check out CHEP's tutorial if you don't already know how to do this!

To Assemble:

  • First thing, we need to attach the oven door
    • Take a length of filament (I used white to match the unit so it wouldn't stand out)
    • Pass it through the hole in the left of the counter, through the oven door and out through the hole in the right of the counter then trim any excess
  • Next add the counter top
    • Place a few dabs of glue on the underside of the counter top and place it on top of the counter, ensuring the tabs fit neatly into the slots
  • If you're adding the hood, do this next as it will make it easier to line up the hob!
    • Run a small amount of glue along the bottom of the hood piece.
    • Lay both the hood piece and the counter on their backs on a flat surface and press them together (this ensures they line up perfectly but be careful they don't stick to your surface!!)
    • To make sure they line up in all directions you can run a flat object like a ruler along the side of both pieces as well - just be careful not to glue it to your cabinet!
  • Finally add the hob!
    • Dab some glue on the underside of your hob and place it on top of the counter, try to centre it as best you can!

To Assemble:

  • First thing, we need to attach the dishwasher door
    • Take a length of filament (I used white to match the unit so it wouldn't stand out)
    • Pass it through the hole in the left of the counter, through the dishwasher door and out through the hole in the right of the counter then trim any excess
  • Next add the counter top
    • Place a few dabs of glue on the underside of the counter top and place it on top of the counter, ensuring the tabs fit neatly into the slots

Build Your Kitchen!

20210518_173831.jpg
20210518_180442 (1).jpg

There's not really a right or wrong way to put this all together and I imagine what I chose to print and piece together is different to what you might've chosen!

I just wanted to add this final step just to show a few of the pieces together and also to encourage anyone who does give this a go to have fun with it and maybe share what you make if you're comfortable doing that?

I'd really love to see what you do with these!!

By the way - If you're after the table and chairs or accessories visible in some of the pictures, I show how to make them in the dining set instructable and provide STLs there too but let me know in the comments if there's anything else you're after - I'd be happy to see if I can make it for you!
