Mistletoe Drone
This was super fun urban intervention I created in December 2013. It got tons of press and 200,000 views online. All my work is about playfully re-imagining the world around us. Drones in the news were causing all sorts of paranoia and I wanted to reframe them from being something scary and ominous to be being fun and human. Its not about the technology, its about how we use it.
I'll explain the super simple setup that you too can use to spread holiday cheer from above!
I used the Parrot AR Drone 2.0. It works great. Because the ultrasound sensor is directly underneath the body, I needed to hang the mistletoe on the sides of the hull, out of the sensor's range. I made two small, equally weighted bunches of mistletoe and bundled them with a paperclip and rubber band. I used the paperclip as a hook to let me easily attach them to the drone's hull. I taped some tinsel onto the perimeter of the hull, attached the two mistletoe bunches, and it was good to go!
