DIY Miniature Solar System...
Today in this instructables im going to make a miniature solar system using just household and some common craft items..i didn't used any fancy equipment or materials to just keep this project very easy to recreat even by small children...
Firstly as for a solar system... As you all know that we have different sized planets... Some are really big like jupotar... And some are like very small like venues... And we have the sun.. Which is way larger than any other planet in our solar system in size comparison..... So it's almost impossible to make all the planets in their actual proportion.... With the sun in original proportion.... To solve that problem I have scaled every planet and the sun in manageable and quite OK sizes..... I will leave a chart which I made for this purpose....
So without wasting further time... Let's get into the project... 😄😄😄
Things We Gonna Need...
For this simple project I made a easy to follow process... And here are the items we are going to need...
- Modeling clay /epoxy clay
- Some regular powder
- Cardboard
- Acrylic paint
- Some wooden sticks
- Superglue
- Black permanent marker (sharpy)
- Craft glue
- Some random stuffs
Also there are some items or tools, which are needed for this build but they are optional...
- Glue gun and hot glue sticks
- Drill bit (same sized of the wooden stick)
- Drill machine (battery one is preferred)
- Paint brush
- Sculpting tools
- Randon tools
Mixing Some Epoxy Clay
Firstly take each amount of both A part and B part and mix until homogeneous...
I will suggest to mix the clay for atleast 2 minutes...
Remember one thing... If the clay isn't mixed well... It will cause problem in the hardening process... So make sure that the clay is mixed well.... And if you are using epoxy clay like me.. Then it will start getting warmer and will start to solidify....
So be quick...
Forming the Planets
Make a long piece from that mixed epoxy clay.. And then simply take a part from it...
Start rolling the clay and form a sphere..... The diameter should be 23 mm (roughly)... If you are using my dimensions..
This will be the sun.... At first the sphere will not be perfect... Make a rough shape.. And then shape it later...
As like the sun... Now make the other 8 planets (I'm skipping Pluto as it's now a dwarf planet... And it's too tiny to make)
Here are the diameters for the following planets
Sun - 23 mm
Mercury - 2.5 mm
Venus - 6 mm
Earth - 6.5 mm
Mars - 3.5 mm
Jupiter - 14 mm
Saturn - 11.5 mm
Uranus - 8.5 mm
Neptune - 8 mm
Let the Planets Set
Now after forming the planets... Leave them for atleast 2 hours to let them harden..
I will suggest you to give them a complete 6 hour rest... Depending on your clay type...
If you want.. You can occasionally roll them further to make them more round...
Start Preparing the Base
Take a circle of cardboard with a radius of 7 cm...
And matching cardboard stripes with a width of 3.5 cm
Now... Using hot glue... Attach the outer ring around the circle... Use a 2nd piece of needed...
Drilling Into the Planets
Take a drill bit of the same size of the wooden sticks..
Drill in the spheres...
Drill only halfway.... Dont drill through the planets....
I will suggest you to leave Mercury and other small planets....
After drilling take 9 equal sized small wooden sticks (1.5 cm each)
Using hot glue... Fix the sticks in the planet...
And for the smaller planets.... Just simply stick the planets in the sticks using superglue
. Let the glue dry for some time...
Prime the Planets
After the planets are on their respective sticks....
Prime the planets with white acrylic paint...
Use 2 coats.... And dry them as well
Finish the Planet Colouring
Now... It's the fun part...
Download some reference images of the solar system and the individual planets...
Take your time and paint the planets as shown in the pictures.... I'm not perfect... But I tried...
Also in this step you have to do 2 more things...
- Add a outer ring around the Saturn.... Made with normal paper.. And paint that as well...
- Paint the sticks in black... Using a permanent marker.. (black)
Let Then Set
Now.. Let the colouring set for some hours.... It's needed for the process.....
Otherwise the paint will come off in the process....
If you want... You can put a clear coat at this time...
Complete the Base
Now... Again mix some more epoxy clay.... And cover the whole inside of the base...
You can either make the inner side smooth... Or keep it natural...
Also.. While the clay is soft... Mark the places of the planets with a easy to make Paper template...
Make the holes bigger with a same stick...
Colour the Bast and Add Some Starts..
Now colour the base intou your favorite colour...
I used black acrylic paint for the outside...
And dark blue mixed with black for the inside...
Make sure to use 2 coats... And dry the paint well....
Now if you want... Add some starts.... With white paint.... It's a optional step...
Also you can mark the travel paths of the planets with a white pen...
Fix the Planets Into Their Respective Positions
Now... Using some super glue....
Fox the planets in their respective places....
Make sure that the joints are well stuck...
This step is the easiest of among all....
It's Finished....
And this is how you can also make your own miniature Solar system... It's a great fun project for kids and school project...
Make your own... And let me see how your project turned out.....
There is no reason that you have to copy exact my project..... You can use the theme... And by using your own creativity.. And make your own version.... 😄 😄 😄
