Mini IKEA Kitchenette

My name is Amy and I've always enjoyed making crafts, especially mini versions. It all began watching Youtube videos that were titled "The Smallest Functional House EVER" or "Mini Lap-pool for Pets!". Now, wanting to pursue architecture, I came across a wonderful functional IKEA design of a kitchenette. The color palette and textures blended so well that I knew this was the next mini project I wanted to create.

Activities in this building process include:

• measuring and scaling proportions
• exacto knife for precision
• painting for color contrast
• assembly with wood glue

Estimated Time: 5 hours

Materials:

1. Balsawood Strips (1/16th, 1/8th, 1/4th inches)
2. Aluminum Foil
3. Black Faux Leather
4. Black Paint
5. Black Sharpie
6. Wood Glue

Handy:

1. Exacto Knife
2. White/Black Pencil
3. Scissors
4. Q-tips
5. 3-edged Ruler
6. Paper Towels
7. Sandpaper

Use a faint white/black pencil to measure your length of wood proportional to life-scale (up to your scale:

• 4 long pieces
• 4 medium-long pieces
• 13 medium pieces
• 28 small pieces

Sandpaper can be used to clean up rough edges. Be careful of how much you sand off as it can change proportions.

Paint the exterior pieces with black paint

• Use acrylic paint for quicker absorption and easy wash-off

Use wood glue to stick exterior pieces and use a thin layer for the glue to dry faster.

• The Q-tip's edge can be cut off for more precise gluing

After the exterior is done, exact measurements can be made to cut the faux leather into closer measurements for one large back piece, two side pieces, and one front piece.

The balsa wood can be stacked horizontally for the cabinetry look.

Aluminum foil should be first bent into the desired sink shape. Then, cutting a hole from a piece of aluminum for a smoother counter top, the sink can be placed through the hole and sides can be covered with two thin pieces of aluminum for a cleaner look. Another piece of aluminum should be attached to the back for support and visual aesthetics.
