This project is a scale model of a holographic stage, similar to those used in events such as Magical Mirai. A projector places an image onto a transparent screen, which provides the illusion of a hologram.

Supplies

  • wood (400x200x30mm )
  • wood putty
  • sandpaper
  • spray paint (black, silver)
  • 4 small L brackets & screws
  • 1 acrylic plate (A4 size, 0.5mm thickness)
  • 1 adhesive projector film (A4 size)
  • long barbeque sticks
  • oslo paper
  • super glue
  • acrylic paint
  • projector

Constructing the Base

Sand the wood block until smooth, and fill in any gaps with wood putty. Spray the block black.

Constructing the Trusses

Cut barbecue sticks in such a way matching the above crossing pattern. The sides of the trusses must reach over the height of the A4 size screen while the top truss stretches and bridges the gap between the two. To extend the reaches of these sticks, the horizontally placed ones were joined with tape in order to lengthen them enough.

Mounting the Brackets

Space two pairs of brackets symmetrically from the center (facing front). Ensure they are both 150mm from the center, and screw in place, leaving a 0.5mm gap between each pair of brackets.

Constructing the Spotlights

Cut and roll Oslo paper into small cylinders, with one end capped. Paint black before attaching to the trusses or the base. Glue trusses upright, attached to the sides of the front of the base of the stage as seen in previous pictures.

Mounting the Film

Carefully apply the adhesive projection film onto the acrylic sheet. Once applied, slide the acrylic sheet into the brackets. It should hold with friction alone.

Setup and Testing

Download a hologram ready video, place your chosen projector so that it focuses directly on the transparent screen, and enjoy watching your new mini-hologram concert!
