Floss wrapped rainbows are a super simple project that requires just a few supplies. You can make these any size, from large wall hangings to cute little mini rainbows. You can even customize your colors to fit your style. With just a few colors of embroidery floss, thicker yarn, clear thread and a needle, you can make your own rainbow! This is a super simple, beginner friendly project!

Cut the Yarn

To make a mini rainbow, use a chunkier style yarn as the base. For my rainbow, I started with about 3 inches of yarn and cut 7 strips of yarn, one for each the different colors of the classic rainbow. Measurements don't need to be exact, guessing is totally appropriate here as you'll be trimming it all down later!

Once you cut your pieces, form a rainbow shape and use a straight edge and mark a line across to indicate where the start and end of the color needs to be. For this example, I used a purple pen so you could see it in the photos. Use a pencil or a lighter colored marker on your own project.

Wrap the Yarn

Starting at the edge of the marked line on the yarn, wrap the embroidery floss tightly around the yarn. I found it easier to attach the end of the embroidery floss to something such as a water bottle. Make sure to push the embroidery floss up occasionally to fill in any gaps. Wrap the floss around and around until you get to the finish line mark. Use a single half hitch knot to tie the end of the embroidery floss and leave a longer tail.

Complete this step for all the colors you'd like to use.

Sew the Colors Together

Next, sew the colors together using clear thread. Using clear thread will help you hide the stitches between the colors. Sew from the bottom color to the top color and complete across the entire row joining two colors together at a time. To add on another color, sew between the most recent top color and the new top color (so from blue to green instead of purple to green).

If your colors don't exactly line up, slide the embroidery floss up or down a little to make the colors even.

Trim the Yarn

Now that all the colors are attached to each other, you can trim the yarn. Use a pair of scissors to cut straight across.

Fluff the Yarn

Pull the threads of the yarn to fluff it out and separate the fibers. You can also utilize a comb or brush to really separate the fibers. Trim the fibers a little to make your clouds rounder and remove any fluff pieces that stick out too far.

Add a magnet, pin back or loop to display your rainbow and enjoy!

This project can be sized up or down, depending on the thickness of the yarn you use. If you'd like to do a large wall hanging size, use thicker rope and yarn to wrap around.

I hope you enjoyed this super simple and colorful project. What colors will you use?
