Mini Decorative Pillow Out of Felt

IMG_0090.JPG

This pillow is a great desktop decoration and an even better last-minute gift to friends and family. (Even though Christmas kind of already ended....) This pillow requires some sewing knowledge and some sewing materials, so we'll go into that now.

Tools and Supplies

For this craft, you will need:

  • Felt (or other material)
  • A needle
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • "Something" to stuff it with (I used toilet paper b/c I'm cheap AF)
  • Glue (Not a glue stick)
  • A ruler

Cut Out Pillow Fabric

Cut out a rectangle out of the piece of felt that you want to be the pillow. Be aware that you will be folding this in half to make the full pillow. (For example, if you want a pillow that is about 3 in. * 5 in., you would cut out a piece that is about 6 in. * 5 in.)

Prepare to Sew

First, you must fold the cut piece of felt in half. This will be about the size of the finished product. Then, push the thread through the hole in the needle and tie the thread to the needle. After this, tie few knots at the end of the string to ensure that the string does not slip through. If you are having trouble threading the needle, visit this page. http://www.artofmanliness.com/2013/12/14/the-easiest-way-to-thread-a-needle/

Sew First Two Edges Together

Use a blanket stitch to seal the first two edges. Make sure that one of these edges is the middle edge, leaving one side edge open. Also be sure to leave the knot at the end of the string showing on the outside because we will be flipping the fabric inside out. If you do not know how to sew a blanket stitch, watch this video.

Flip, Fill, and Seal

After sewing the edges together, flip the fabric inside out. (Mine is flipped inside out in the picture) Then, put the thing you are using to stuff it with into the open edge. When you have a good amount of "stuffing" in your pillow, take your needle and a new piece of thread and use a ladder/invisible stitch to seal the last opening. If you do not know how to do a ladder/invisible stitch, then watch the following video.

Decorate and Enjoy
