Mini Book Streamers

I first made these for my sisters book-themed baby shower and they have since been loaned out for two other celebrations another shower and a graduation party. Is there any better compliment?

I used pages from a book I got for free from my local library's bookstore for the inside pages and scrapbooking paper for the outside. Prices at my library bookstore are 50 cents for paperbacks and one dollar for hardcovers, but they also have a free shelf for things that have been around a while so be sure and ask if yours has one! I just used regular text book pages, but you could try using pages from children's books as well. These are all old and used so don't feel guilty cutting them! If they don't sell and they need the room the books go into the recycling.

These streamers are cheap and quick to make, but add greatly to the impact of the party. They can also be customized to suit any color scheme!

Cut Out Your Pages

Using your recycled book, cut out pages to form the inside of your mini books. The size is completely up to you. Big or small, just be sure your mini clothespins can support it. I made mine by cutting my book pages to approximately 5 inches wide and 3 3/4 inches high (about 12.5 cm wide by 9.5 cm high). I found that this size works perfectly if you use 8 1/2 by 11 inch paper cut into quarters for the covers of the books. But I'll be honest, once I made one, I did them all by eye and just trimmed the edges as necessary.

Cut Out Your Covers

Cut out your scrapbooking or colored paper, or any paper you want to use for the cover or your mini books to just bigger than the inside pages. If you are using 8 1/2 by 11 inch paper for your outside, fold your paper in half lengthwise, then widthwise so it is in quarters then cut out on the folds. My outside book covers measure approximately 5 1/2 inches wide by 4 1/4 inches high (about 14 cm by 11 cm).

Assemble and Staple

Place 3-4 sheets of your inside papers (pages) into one of your outside cover papers. Staple two staples along the fold and you are done! Side note, I did press the inside pages so they opened up more when hung. Make as many as you like for your party. Over estimate by a little and use any spares on the tables as extra décor.

Hanging It Up

You can estimate how many mini books you need by measuring the points between where you want to hang them and add about 3 feet (1 meter) fto account for the swag. I spaced mine a little under a foot (30cm) apart so if I was going between two 10 foot poles, I would make at least 13 books for that space. Since these are hung with mini clothespins, its very simple to adjust your spacing!
