MikroTik CRS309 Switch Noctua Fan Install Mod

Using 5V Noctua fans NF-A4x10 we'll be able to place them directly on top of the MikroTik CRS309 transceivers, reducing the temperature well under their rated temp and possibly extending their life.

6x Small Zip Ties

Remove the four phillips head screws that hold down the CRS309 chassis cover.

Remove the cover by sliding it back towards the rear and off.

With the cover removed, place the first fan centered above the first set of SPF+ ports and glue it into place at the four plastic transceiver light guides. Ensure the fans open end (suction) is facing up with the fan bracing down (discharge).

Repeat the process for the three remaining fans.

Take up the excessive slack of the four fan cables and tie them off with zip ties.

Install two fan Y cables and attach each one to a set of fan, then take up the slack by typing them off each with a zip tie.

Flip the CRS309 over with it's face down. Remove the two 3mm allen screws that hold down the left side of the CPU heatsink.

With the two heatsink screws removed, the associated corner of the switch can now give a little and temporarily bend to allow external routing of the main fan cable.

Connect the remaining fan Y cable to the existing two Y cables and route the single end through the movable bend in the switch chassis between the heatsink.

Replace the cover and connect the single fan extension cable to the header now sticking out the rear. It's now ready to attach to your external 5V USB power supply!
