Midsommar May Queen Halloween Costume
For Halloween this year, I decided to recreate the iconic May Queen costume from the film Midsommar. You can watch the video on how to make it, or scroll down further for some detailed instructions and pictures!
Supplies
- A long white dress with long sleeves (base garment)
- White hoop skirt
- White beanie hat
- Bamboo sticks
- Acrylic gemstone
- White welly boots
- White cotton gloves
- An absolute mountain of various artificial flowers (seriously you can't have enough!!!)
- Large wooden pole/stick
- Varnish
- Super glue, hot glue
- Needle & thread
- Makeup
Get That Base!
So to start off we obviously need a base for this Midsommar costume! I decided to purchase a long knitted dress with long bellowed sleeves. I also purchased a large hoop skirt, and attached the top of the hoop skirt to the bottom of the dress with a needle and thread. It didn't go to plan at first and I ended up with a weird looking mermaid dress, so I made some quick adjustments to achieve the silhouette I needed.
FLOWERS!!!!!!!!
Now it was time to take on the longest step of this entire costume, and that was attaching hundreds and hundreds of artificial flowers to the surface of this dress using hot glue. The aim was to create a collar style at that the top of the dress with artificial foliage, and then cover as much of the rest of the dress with various other plants and flowers.
A Crown!
Now it was time to make the headpiece/crown for this May Queen costume. For this I bought a regular white beanie hat, and hand sewed some bamboo sticks inside the fold of the hat. Unfortunately the poles were a little too long so I decided to cut them down to a much more manageable length.
FLOWERS!!!!
Finally cover this headpiece in lots and lots of artificial flowers and foliage. I decided to hot glue the plant style foliage into the fold of the beanie, and them cover the rest of the surface with regular colourful artificial flowers.
A Staff?
In the original costume the May Queen doesn't actually have a staff, however for my interpretation I decided I wanted to add a little more drama! So I salvaged this large stick from the ground and chopped it down to size. Next up I wanted to secure a blue acrylic gemstone to the top of the staff. For this I cut a hole into the top of the stick (which was quite a struggle) I then applied lots of super glue to the top, and then attached my gem into place. Next it was time to cover the staff in various different pieces of artifical foliage and flowers.
Accessories and Makeup
To finish this look, I opted for some plain white welly boots and some white cotton gloves. For the makeup I wanted to look as if I had spent a little too long in the sun; so I decided to apply some cream blush to my nose and cheeks, and the create some freckles with a sharpie....because I wanted them to stay on my face! I then bought some flower shaped contact lenses just to add a bit of creepiness!
I Can't Wear Them!!
Unfortunately I completely forgot that I'm terrible with contact lenses, so I had to scrap that part of the look!!
NOW SERVE!!!
Now it's time to have fun, show off your look, and make everyone jelous!! I think I ended up doing a pretty decent interpretation, I think Misommar would be proud!! However saying that I will never be making something like this again, it took waaaaay too long to complete!!! HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!
