Making a Miami Vice Cocktail

miami-vice.jpg

What if I told you your two favorite frozen alcoholic beverages could be combined? This amazing tropical combination of a strawberry daiquiri and a pina colada is what is known as a Miami Vice Cocktail. In this Instructables, I'll be teaching you how to make the Miami Vice cocktail as well as showing you two of the many ways to present it. Most bars will serve up this drink or its components using pre-made mixes, so if it's quality you want you're better off making this drink at home.

Here's What You'll Need:

- Blender (make sure it is capable of blending ice)

- 2 cups of strawberries

- 1/2 ounce of grenadine

- 1 1/2 ounces of cream of coconut

- 1 1/2 ounces of pineapple juice

- Mixing cup

- 2 large cups

- 1 glass for presentation (drinker's preference)

- 4 ounces of 151 rum

- 4 scoops of ice

Making the Pina Colada.

Step 1: Pour 1 1/2 ounces of cream of coconut into your blender. Use your mixing cup to measure the amounts.

Step 2: Pour in 2 ounces of 151 rum.

Step 3: Add 1 1/2 ounces of pineapple juice.

Step 4: Add 2 scoops of ice to the blender. Do not let the ice sit for too long, if it starts to melt it will ruin the drink's thickness.

Step 5: Blend the mixture for about 30 seconds.

Step 6: Pour the pina colada mix into a large cup after blending.

Making the Strawberry Daiquiri.

!WARNING! Before beginning this step, make sure to thoroughly clean your blender.

Step 1: Drop 2 cups of strawberries into your blender.

Step 2: Pour in 2 ounces of 151 rum.

Step 3: Add 1/2 ounce of grenadine for color.

Step 4: Blend the mixture for about 30 seconds.

Step 5: Pour your strawberry daiquiri into a separate large cup.

Presentation

Step 1: Check the consistency of both your drinks. The thickness is the most important part. If you are left with a very liquidy drink, you may have added too little ice or too much rum. You also could have let your ice melt before blending.

Step 2: Here you have 2 options;

For a horizontally layered presentation: Slowly pour the pina colada on top of your strawberry daiquiri. Make sure not to pour too heavily or else the daiquiri will break through into the pina colada and vice versa. There should be a horizontal separation between the two liquids. You can layer them as many times as you'd like.

For a vertical (side by side) presentation: Place a wooden spoon down the center of your glass. Slowly pour the strawberry daiquiri on one side of the spoon and the pina colada on the other. Remove the spoon once your drink has settled and you should have a vertical separation. You can twirl the spoon while removing it to create a more unique blending.

Step 3: Garnish the side of your glass with either a strawberry (half or full) or a slice of pineapple and enjoy!
